Summary

The Carpenter Apprentice will be enrolled in a 2-year program and will be trained under capable and experienced journey workers in the tasks of constructing, erecting, stripping, and/or repairing structures of steel, wood or plywood using carpenter’s hand and power tools conforming to construction documents. This position will be exposed to the following duties and will participate in classroom and supplemental training.


Roles and Responsibilities

Acquires the skills to become a Carpenter by learning/helping in the following areas:

  • Installing Footing Forms
  • Building and Installing Wall and Column Forms
  • Building and Installing Structural Deck Forms
  • Sets Slab-on-Grade Forms
  • Preps and Sets Tilt-up/Precast Forms
  • Performs General Labor Duties


PARTICIPATES IN TRAINING / CERTIFICATIONS:

  • 144 classroom hours per year
  • 2000 hours of on-the-job training per year
  • Vertical formwork training on site specific forms used
  • Approved career-related training
  • 10 hour OSHA
  • 4 hour IIF Workshop
  • Rigging
  • Anti-Harassment
  • First Aid / CPR / Bloodborne Pathogen


Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED preferred
  • Minimum of one year of related experience and/or training preferred
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers
  • Conversational English preferred
  • Familiarity with the abbreviated and common construction terms of the equipment and materials used preferred
  • Ability to calculate mathematical figures such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, and proportions to practical situations
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure and apply associated math skills
  • Ability to use an iPad to access some program curriculum
  • Ability to exert heavy physical effort, handling average weight objects up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to kneel, stoop, crouch, balance, climb or crawl
  • Ability to work at heights
  • Work involves exposure to outside weather conditions and dirt, dust, fumes, and/or loud noises
