General Function:

Under the direct supervision of the Childcare and/or Camp Coordinator and indirect leadership of the Athletic Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA the Childcare Counselor will be responsible for the safety, supervision, behavior management and programming of the participants in the School Age Child Care Programs.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sight, Hearing and Speaking
  • Normal hearing tone of voice up to 30 feet and visual sight from a distance of 100 yards
  • Standing, Walking, Stooping, Kneeling, Squatting, Climbing, Sitting
  • Lifting and carrying a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Pulling a minimum of 100 lbs

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide constant supervision of children, maintaining safe ratios by not leaving an area unless adequate supervision is present. One may have to arrive early or stay later for 30-45 minutes longer than actual program hours.
  • Supervise and actively participates with all children during program hours. Ensure the execution of lesson or activity plans as an integral part of the daily program, making changes as they become necessary.
  • Build relationships with all children. Interacts with parents and other family members during drop off/pick up and family activities.
  • Use proper group control inside, outside and during transitions.
  • Implements the YMCA discipline policy.
  • Assist in fulfilling the mission of the YMCA. Prepare and lead appropriate devotions for the groups.
  • Arrives to work on time and dressed in accordance with the dress code including, but not limited to wearing the YMCA name tag.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe environment free from strangers. Ensure the safety of all children and staff.
  • Demonstrate and role model respect to YMCA property and maintain a clean and safe environment. Maintain all equipment used in one’s program segment in good order. Report all program changes and equipment needs to supervisor or director.
  • Attend all trainings and staff meetings. Absences must be approved by the director and the counselor is responsible for information covered in the training or meeting.
  • Follow policy and procedures regarding sign in and sign out. Takes accurate attendance and head counts as directed.
  • Participate in the supervision and planning of Summer Camp and Afterschool.
  • Share problems with supervisor and director if needed so that they can be solved.
  • At all times treat participants, peers, and supervisors with respect.
  • Assist in programming and leadership of assemblies, activities, and special events.
  • Follow all policy and procedures of the YMCA of Sumter Association.
  • Perform related duties as required and assigned.
  • Assist in achieving 100% return rate on quality evaluations.
  • Gives a good effort in fulfilling other responsibilities as they arise in the attempt to provide our members/program participants with safe, high quality programming, instruction, and supervision.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have an interest in working with school age children
  • Must have an enthusiastic personality
  • Must be attentive to details
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must have excellent human relation skills
  • Must be able to take initiative in making decisions and solving problems in the areas of assigned responsibilities
  • Must be mature, decisive, and responsible and must be able to put the needs of members and program participants ahead of his/her own needs
  • Must be customer service oriented
