GENERAL FUNCTION:

Camp Counselors are the heart and soul of mentorship, caregiving, and supervision of campers while at Camp Erdman. Broadly speaking the responsibilities include, but are not limited to, looking after the safety and well-being of up to 14 kids, ensuring camper safety, and running activities for campers throughout the week. This position will require you to lead a variety of activities and programs as set out in the Camp Erdman program schedule. The Camp Counselor will fill the roles of friend, mentor and role model for all campers. This job requires constant 24 hour supervision of campers beginning at Sunday afternoon check - in through Friday afternoon check-out.

Camp counselors will also function as day camp counselors for at least one (1) week throughout summer. Camp Erdman Day Camp runs from 8:30am to 4:30pm. While working as a day camp counselor, you will report directly to the Day Camp Director. You will not live in cabins with the resident campers, however, you are required to support resident camp operation from 6:30pm to 9:15pm when it comes to evening programming, showers, reflections, and bedtime for campers. If Camp Erdman becomes short - staffed for any reason throughout summer, day camp counselors will be required to move into a resident camp cabin.

All staff will also work one (1) stayover weekend throughout summer. Campers have the option to stay over the weekend while attending consecutive camp session weeks and Camp Erdman provides staffing for the weekend. Stayover weekends are meant to be a time for campers to wind down and relax before another busy week of camp. Lastly, counselors may be expected to assist in the operations of our 4th of July Family Camp mid-way through summer.

KNOW-HOW:
The Camp Counselor must have a thorough understanding of the YMCA’s mission and goals, and a desire to work with children between the ages of 7 and 17. Leadership skills, enthusiasm, patience, a sense of humor and self-control are all essential. Person must have the ability to provide fun and innovative programs to youth. These programs will be a combination of directed programs in the areas of arts & crafts, aquatics, sports, team building, hiking, and self-directed programs such as group games, campfires, camp out and other activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a high school graduate
  • Experience working with children
  • CPR/AED and First Aid required
  • TB test required
  • Lifeguard certified preferred
  • Ability to be physically active all day

Job Type: Temporary

Pay: $320.00 - $400.00 per week

  • Monday to Friday
  • Night shift
  • Weekend availability
