FUNCTION:

Under limited supervision, performs general police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Work is performed by established departmental policies and procedures, local ordinances, state statutes, and federal laws. The employee is subject to hazards of narcotic/investigative and general law enforcement work. Performance is measured through frequent conferences and yearly formal performance evaluations. Has completed the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy for L.E.-1. Oversees and performs routine or standardized duties involving the choice of actions within limits defined by standard practices and instructions and decision-making that may affect the accuracy of functional results.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist and oversees the activities of the Narcotic/Investigative Division of the Sheriff's office through a chain of command; perform such supervisory duties as scheduling; assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; coordinating activities; Review the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed.

Assist with and monitors training to ensure adequate training of subordinate personnel.

Assist and oversees the availability of adequate and properly working equipment and vehicles,

Assist with the collection of, packaging of, and securing evidence; interviews victims and witnesses; questions suspects; coordinate narcotic/investigations with other agencies as required; prepare and forward division reports; etc

Assist in special narcotic/investigative methods as required, including stakeouts, undercover investigations, raids, traffic stops, surveillance operations, etc.

Provides supervision and leadership in emergency, stressful, or high‑risk situations. Performs general law enforcement duties, including apprehending and arresting criminal suspects and law violators, responding to public calls for assistance, completing required records, etc

Assist in the preparation of cases for court; provides court testimony as necessary,

Deputy Sheriff - Criminal Investigations Division

Assists other departments as necessary,

Performs public relations and service duties, including speaking to groups about Criminal Activities, etc.

Performs various general administrative tasks, including but not limited to budget preparation for the narcotic/investigations, attending meetings, answering the telephone, etc.

Attends required periodic training sessions and seminars, and participates in required physical fitness activities. Maintains the required level of proficiency in the use of firearms and evasive action/driving skills.

Reviews prepares and/or submits a variety of documents including, incident reports, narcotic/investigative reports, evidence sheets, photographs, criminal histories, crime scene charts, search warrants, booking reports, affidavits, schedules, case files, timesheets, routine reports, and correspondence, etc.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals including the Sheriff, co‑workers, subordinates, attorneys, citizens, suspects, witnesses, informants, FBI, SLED, ATF, ABC agents, Department of Corrections personnel, other state and federal agencies, news media, community leaders, school personnel, students, etc.

Operates and maintains assigned police vehicles and various types of other equipment. Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks.

Performs other related duties as required

Protects individuals and the public by ensuring the enforcement of all local and state laws.

Administers first-aid to the injured in emergency cases; safeguards against exposure to blood-borne pathogens from accident victims, crime victims, and suspects.

Works on an on-call 24-hour basis is subject to deployment into the field during emergency incidents or crises.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

· Working knowledge of pertinent Federal, State laws, and County ordinances;

and the geography of the county and the location of important buildings and major streets.

· Must be certified in the use and maintenance of a firearm.

· Must have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions

· Ability to act quickly and efficiently in an emergency

· Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions

· Ability to supervise and direct the preparation and maintenance of a variety of

records and reports accurately.

Departmental testing will be administered during the interview. Initial testing consists of an extensive background check, and then a polygraph test. Post-offer drug testing, psychological exam, pre-placement physical, and a functional evaluation capacity test will be required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires the employee to frequently sit, walk, and stand and use hands to handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls: and reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to kneel and bend at the waist. The employee must be able to use hands and fingers to handle objects such as weapons, handcuffs, etc. The employee is required to walk, talk and hear. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to seventy-five (75) pounds and move one hundred fifty (150) pounds. The employee must have the ability to restrain prisoners. The employee may be required to run in order to apprehend a person. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Position is subject to the hazards of investigatory and general law enforcement work.

HOURS OF WORK/MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

This position is non-exempt and reports directly to the Sheriff’s Office. This position is paid on the cycle pay plan. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

· Must be 21 years of age or older

· Valid S.C. drivers license in good standing, must pass all required tests and must

be able to operate standard issue vehicles.

· High School Diploma or equivalent

· Completed degree(s) beneficial to position may be partially considered as work experience.

· Personal computer experience preferred

· Supervisory experience preferred

· Three (3) years experience in law enforcement L.E.-1

· Graduate of S.C. Criminal Justice Academy for L.E.-1, or able to obtain certification

· Must be in good physical condition

· Must be able to maintain required level of proficiency in the use of firearms
