Job Description
Reporting to the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), The Behavior Support Specialist is responsible for communicating with Vanguard School staff during the process of maintaining the Positive Behavior Support Program. They are a positive role model for students and work with the educational team in providing incentives and rewards for students’ demonstration of positive behaviors. The Behavior Support Specialist supports staff and students by providing a consistent presence in classrooms and common areas during transition, lunch, recess, and bus arrival and dismissal. They respond to behavioral incidents in a timely manner, support the Positive Behavior Support Program, implement strategies identified in students’ Positive Behavior Support Plans, and collect behavior data for subsequent analysis.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Contribute to and support school-wide incentive programs to encourage students to achieve behavioral goals.
  • Provide crisis intervention and other assistance needed by staff members to maintain safety.
  • Successfully complete the training and implementation of UkeruTM blocking techniques and the following Safety CareTM techniques: incident prevention and minimization, physical safety, and physical management for students in behavioral and emotional crises.
  • Conduct initial and recertification trainings for staff members throughout the year as needed including trainings that are scheduled on non-work days and after work hours.
  • Implement consistent prescriptive discipline procedures appropriate to the individual needs of each student as outlined in IEP documents.
  • Regularly meet with staff members to collaborate on classroom management, student-specific behaviors, and safety care procedures.
  • Assist the educational staff by supporting teachers in carrying out students’ behavior plans. Schedule time within classrooms to support behavior plan implementation and school-wide positive behavior support protocols.
  • Collect, maintain, and organize student behavior data and use this data to evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral interventions.
  • Provide input to the team on possible causes of student behavioral problems, and suggest methods of intervention.
  • Comply with all organizational policies and procedures including those stated in the VFES Policies & Procedures Manual and additional verbal and written communications provided to staff members.
  • Maintain a professional, confidential, and ethical relationship with administrators, colleagues, parents, students, and others at all times.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, in-service activities, and other meetings as required.
  • Maintain proper credentials for assignment and remain educationally informed in all related areas including PDE regulations and state/national standards through continued professional study and attending workshops and conferences.

Qualifications
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

  • Training in Special Education, Psychology or a related field; Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in behavioral health field preferred.
  • PA teacher certification in special education and/or secondary guidance counseling preferred.
  • Familiarity with applied behavior analysis (ABA) and positive behavior support; formal training in Safety Care™ or other crisis prevention techniques preferred.
  • Two years’ experience working in behavioral health field providing direct services to students on the autistic spectrum and/or with emotional disorders.
  • Ability to engage intellectually and physically with students in need of crisis intervention.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all constituents (administrators, colleagues, students, parents, and others).
  • Ability to use computers and perform clerical skills at a proficient level.
