The Associate, King Conservation Science Scholars (“KCSS”) position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society (“CZS”) by engaging teens in the Society’s mission both at the zoo and in the communities, it serves, including generating consistent, positive exposure for the Society through community relations and outreach, identifying/communicating with/involving community leadership in CZS programs, and representing the institution to diverse constituencies. The primary goal for this position is to foster deeper relationships between teens throughout the Chicagoland area and the natural world.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in interpretation training and conservation coaching.
  • Collaborate with KCSS Teen Leadership Board of Directors to ensure that program protocols, expectations, ideas and action plans are practical and inclusive.
  • Serves as an additional point of contact for King Scholars while they are at the zoo, community center or out in the field.
  • Provides Fearless Feedback and support for other emerging King Scholar leaders.
  • Other related duties as assigned to assure successful achievement of Society objectives.

Position Requirements and Specifications

The requirements for this position include the following:
  • Current and active student in the King Conservation Science Scholars Program at Brookfield Zoo or similar youth engagement community program.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must report to work on time.
  • Ability to work well with others and in a team.
  • Ability to communicate with the public.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Interest in leadership, conservation or community.
  • Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.

Preferred Qualifications: Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency is a plus.

Additional Information: This position description summarizes the primary duties and functions of this position, but should not be considered a complete listing of every duty the incumbent may ever be called upon to perform. Must represent the Society in a professional manner at all times. Incumbent works closely with other staff to plan and provide support for programs and operations. Individual will be expected to be present and visible at Society events in the community and/or for other events and audiences as requested. This is a seasonal, part-time position requiring some evenings and regular weekend or event work. Must be available to work an average of 25 hours per week, Monday through Friday during Summer (generally the months of June through August.) Must be available to work a flexible weekend schedule of an average of 4 hours per week the remainder of the year. This position requires the ability to move across Zoo grounds, remain stationary for long periods of time an perform work in a variety of weather conditions. Work schedules are based on the needs of the operation. Some local travel around the Chicagoland area is required; other travel may be required.
