The Washington State Ferry (WSF) system is an essential part of Washington's transportation network with more than 1,800 employees working together to safely and efficiently carry nearly 24 million passengers a year! There are over 400 sailings each day on 9 ferry routes across Puget Sound and through the San Juan Islands, including an international route to Sidney, British Columbia.

The Opportunity
WSF is currently seeking to hire two self-motivated professionals to support ferry terminal construction projects as Transportation Technician 3 (TT3). In this position you will be inspecting construction work at ferry terminals for conformance to contract plans, specifications, and other project requirements. In this role, you will have the opportunity to assist with ensuring safe and reliable ferry transportation throughout Puget Sound.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Field Inspector will:


  • Observe and document all aspects of work performed by contractors
  • Ensure compliance with contract and permit conditions
  • Inspect existing facilities and document findings
  • Perform sampling and testing for a variety of construction materials
  • Review plans specifications and estimates for upcoming projects

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • One (1) year experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent
OR
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and two years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1 or equivalent
And
  • Possess a driver’s license valid in Washington State.
  • Become qualified to sample and test within 6 months of employment (if training is scheduled)
    • Grout
    • Portland cement concrete
    • Aggregates
  • Become qualified to perform within 6 months of employment (if training is scheduled)
    • Hot mix asphalt plant inspection
    • In-place density
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC), within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a state boater education card within 12 months of employment.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Two (2) years experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent

Important Notes
  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Compliance with this mandate is a condition of employment with WSDOT. An exemption may be granted for religious or medical purposes; however, accommodations will be subject to approval based on the essential functions required of the position. The salary listed for this position includes a legislative-approved 5% premium for workers in King County.
