Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in student counseling, communications, education, business or public relations, marketing, or other related fields from a regionally accredited institution.

  • Experience with and ability to operate independently, exercising independent judgment and discretion with little or no guidance, and be able to make decisions on behalf of the Admissions Office and the university that is appropriate, timely, and defensible.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team with a flexible attitude.

• Willingness to work select evenings and weekends• Strong oral presentation and written communication skills.

  • Highly organized.

  • Successful completion of background investigation prior to employment.

License/Certification Required
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to rent vehicle.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Graduate Admissions and Communications is a twelve-month exempt (EHRA) position that leads and assists in the coordination of Appalachian State University’s recruitment of prospective graduate students. This position is responsible for prospective student lead management via multiple high-touch efforts, constructing Slate event management and communications, and collaborating with key campus partners, including Enrollment Management colleagues, to ensure prospects progress through the applicant process.

The Assistant Director counsels prospective students in their graduate school search process by providing information about the admissions, campus visit, or virtual meeting process. The Assistant Director is an essential part of a constructive and collaborative recruitment team that shares the responsibility for meeting the University’s strategic enrollment goals. Admissions at Appalachian is committed to improving access to higher education and promoting lifelong learning.

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Training and actively utilizing Graduate Student Ambassadors to engage in high-touch communications via phone, face-to-face, or virtual interactions.

  • Maintaining a daily one-on-one calendar to provide high-touch engagement with prospects.

  • Collaborating with graduate program directors to ensure they have the appropriate resources to capture and generate prospective student leads in Slate in an expeditious manner.

  • Maintaining a comprehensive schedule of recruitment events across graduate programs.

  • Maintaining and tracking lead origins to inform student recruitment projections.

  • Attending and participating in monthly University Communications Liaison meetings.

  • Traveling and recruiting prospective students as a representative of App State (Enrollment Management).

  • Supporting the Director of Communications for Enrollment Management with top-of-the-funnel Slate communications.

  • Submitting prospective student and applicant event assessment reports to the Director of Graduate Admissions throughout the recruitment cycle.

  • Assisting with the execution of Slate events for prospects and applicants, including information sessions, recruitment events (on-campus, off-campus, and virtual), yield events, new student orientation, and other non-admissions events throughout the graduate student recruitment cycle.

  • Engaging in and/or leading other initiatives or tasks as assigned.

Typical physical demands of a professional position within a university. The ability to lift and move boxes of travel materials up to 40 pounds, travel during fall and spring travel seasons, and the ability to remain standing/sedentary for long periods at college fairs are also required.
