Job Summary

Supports and assists in the implementation of FIU's employee and labor relations programs and activities including training for the faculty and faculty administrators. Ensures compliance with university policies, regulations, and employment laws. Develops working relationships with university business units, administrators, as well as community resources to facilitate departmental activities. Works in a team-based collaborative environment to meet dynamic and ever-changing customer needs

  • Ensures compliance with applicable employment laws, university's policies and procedures, and the University's various collective bargaining agreements. Administers and interprets policies and agreements for management and staff.
  • Establishes respectful professional relationships with faculty, faculty administrators, and university community
  • Responds to information requests with the highest level of confidentiality, provides support to faculty administrators in the areas of the collective bargaining administration, grievances, discipline, and performance management.
  • Conducts multiple thorough, fair, and timely reviews and assessments of complex employee relations issues including facilitating appropriate intake meetings, background research, interviews, and de-brief meetings with appropriate partners.
  • Gathers and analyzes information/research in support internal investigations to determine if a violation occurred. Reports findings to the Faculty Advisor Board (FAB) team and provides possible solutions to resolve matters.
  • Ensures the appropriate and consistent application of approved policies, practices, and contracts.
  • Prepare and finalize appropriate actions which are clearly and well written with appropriate presentation of facts, analysis, and conclusions, and in accordance with FIU policies, procedures, and applicable bargaining agreements.
  • Manages a load of employee relations cases by providing faculty administrators (i.e., Chairs and Deans) with coaching and counseling while ensuring consistent application and interpretation of university policies, practices, and procedures.
  • As assigned, assists the University's bargaining team during labor negotiations with United Faculty of Florida.
  • Conducts training for faculty and faculty administrators regarding employee and labor relations as necessary.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the Employee & Labor Relations (ELR) tracking system and ELR employee files for assigned caseloads relating to faculty matters.
  • Facilitates exit interviews in a timely manner and provide monthly reports of the analysis of faculty responses in areas which demonstrate patterns and require immediate attention by the FAB team.
  • Conducts and finalizes internal investigations to determine if a university policy and/or any part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement has been violated. Reports findings and provides best course of action to resolve issue(s).
  • Counsels and recommends solutions to faculty administrators when handling employee relations matters. Collaborates, leads and implements solutions to remedy the situation. If applicable and/or performance-related, creates and administers an action plan in conjunction with the faculty administrator.
  • Responsible for coordinating, facilitating, formulates and recommending resolutions to faculty disputes, grievances and appeals procedures.
  • In collaboration with Academic Affairs, provides support to faculty administrative processes including performance evaluations, promotions, and tenure. Coordinates and facilitates faculty disputes, grievances and appeals procedures; formulates and recommends appropriate actions to resolve faculty grievances.
  • Provides support with the Exit process for Faculty, facilitating Exit Interviews, ensuring all appropriate separation processes are managed in a timely manner. Identifies and monitors areas with high turnover rate, reviews data, and suggests recommendations for best course of action to attract and retain high-quality faculty.
  • Responsible for coordinating settlement agreements for faculty as needed. Ensures appropriate calculation of benefits are reflected in the agreement and ensures timely distribution of payments are facilitated.
  • Assists the University's bargaining team during labor negotiations with assigned Union (UFF) which represents University faculty. Participates in negotiating, administering, and ensuring compliance with provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Provides support to Faculty administrative processes including performance evaluations, promotions and tenure.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and six (6) years of professional employee relations experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • HR experience supporting faculty in Higher Education institutions.
  • Master's degree and four (4) years of relevant experience in Employee & Labor Relations.
  • Advanced knowledge of labor/employment law and best practices.
  • Experience with conflict resolution in the work environment and mediating between parties.
  • Ability to coach, consult and influence leaders regarding the importance of good "people" practices and the links to operational success.
  • Ability to develop and effectively leverage relationships across HR and within business units.
