Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the VP Corp. Accounting/ Controller, the Asst. Controller will oversee month-end
closing, corporate reporting, tax templates update, and audit support. Leading a team of 5 to 6
associates, the Asst. Controller will build a strong team, a winning culture, and execute monthly,
timely, accurate closing and financial reporting activities—the Asst. Controller will interface with
internal (functional leaders) and external clients (boards and treasures) on all transactional and
financial accounting and reporting-related matters, including auditors, and partner with our
management teams to deliver exceptional service.
The Asst. Controller will also play a crucial role in supporting corporate accounting initiatives,
system enhancements, migrations, and transactional process consolidation.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The Asst. Controller must possess a high degree of accountability, a sense of urgency,
commitment, and ownership. The Asst. Controller will prioritize tasks to set action plans to achieve
process improvements. This position will collaborate with teams to develop and implement best
practice policies and procedures to meet set objectives.
This is not a traditional controller role limited to month end closing. The successful candidate will
be passionate about gaining efficiency through process change while creating a positive team
environment to recruit, develop and retain talent.
The Asst. Controller must have excellent communication skills to partner with operations, interact
with clients and be a knowledge leader in financial accounting, systems, and the property
management industry. Sound business understanding and presenting practical solutions is a
crucial requirements.
Management
  • Maintain and enforces a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Manage market-level team members
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including recommendations related
to organizational structure for achieving the department's goals and objectives
  • Oversee the accounting operations of subsidiary corporations, especially their controls
systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures
Transactions
  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are reflective of credits, and fee adjustments, collected
promptly
  • Overall look at payroll processing, ensure accuracy and recording
  • Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed
  • Ensure all BS schedules are up to date and accurate and account reconciliations are
complete
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
Reporting
  • Issue timely and complete financial statements (Monthly, Quarterly, and Yearly), complete
tax templates, and consolidation templates for corporate reporting
  • Coordinate the preparation of the corporate
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company
operations
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for pricing decisions, and contract
negotiations
Compliance
  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax fillings
  • Practice and adhere to FirstService Residential Global Service Standards
  • Conduct business at all times with the highest standards of personal, professional, and
ethical conduct
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Oversee the accounting operations of the portfolio and its subsidiaries, especially their
control systems, transaction-processing operations, policies, and procedures
  • Responsible for hiring, performance monitoring, discipline, performance reviews, and
salary adjustments for the team
  • Facilitate resolutions to significant issues with managers, accounting staff, sites/board
members
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (master's preferred)
  • At least 10+ years of experience in corp. accounting/ financial reporting
  • Month-end closing experience with a large multi-entity organization, Bank reconciliations,
BS schedules, and analysis for mid to large companies
  • CPA or CMA preferred
System Proficiencies
  • Experience in Jenark/ Yardi/ Dynamics GP/ Quick Books/ CINC/ Oracle/ SAP
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Excel, modeling, Experience in handling
data
  • Other systems experience ClickPay, Concur, ADP, AvidXchange
  • Experience in Banking platforms and reporting

prepare and submit reports in acceptable formats and on time
  • Ability to conceptualize, plan and organize multiple programs and assignments effectively
  • Ability to work on complex and confidential tasks utilizing judgment, and tact
  • Skill in developing and maintaining good working relationships

  • Other solutions - AvidXchange, Concur, ADP, multiple banking platforms standards,
customized software applications and tools, and standard office equipment.
Physical Requirements / Working Environment
  • Primarily in an office environment with remote work. Will be expected to travel as needed
to company subsidiaries, as well as to potential acquires to conduct due diligence. During
peak (Year-end closing/ audit) seasons may need to work evenings and weekends.
  • Capable of working extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as
necessary
  • Able to see well enough to read faint or partially obscured writing or printing, with corrective
lenses if needed
  • Must be able to speak English in a clear and understandable voice so that various types
of communications may be conducted with people of various levels of education and
capabilities, including exchanging and receiving information over the telephone
  • Position involves sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, shoving, lifting, carrying,
and moving objects that can weigh up to 15 lbs. This movement can occur throughout the
day. Must also be able to climb several flights of stairs if necessary
  • This position will involve working indoors in a controlled climate and with proper lighting
  • Must be able to interact with all types of individuals, be mentally alert, detail-oriented, and
with good reasoning skills
  • Must be able to work in small and confined spaces for extended periods
  • Must have finger dexterity for typing/using a keyboard
