The Position

We currently have an opening for an Assistant Chip Lab Technician, this role reports directly to the Technical Services Manager. The assistant chip lab technician is responsible primarily for the incoming quality inspection and measurement of moisture content and size classification of hog fuel and monorail samples received at the mill. Provides care in operation of the lab equipment. Responsible for checking calibration and keeping records on key measurement equipment and lab housekeeping. Samples that are submitted for testing will need to be processed within 24 hours. Is a backup and can perform all the duties of the Chip Lab Technician. May be assigned special projects at times either closely related to or outside the scope of normal duties.

Job Responsibilities

  • Inspecting incoming trucks for hog fuel quality as they unload (outside).
  • Identifying and quantifying contaminants.
  • Moisture Measurement.
  • Quality Measurement – Size Classification.
  • Collecting samples for hog fuel.
  • Calibration checks and recordkeeping.
  • Trained backup on OCC bale % Moisture & Quality Inspections.
  • Bone dry reports.
  • Housekeeping.
  • Special projects as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Communication skills both oral and written with plant personnel and vendors.


Required Experience

  • 6 to 12 months comparable job experience.


Required Education

  • High school graduate and/or associate degree or equivalent experience in comparable job.


Work Schedule and Environment

  • Working times will be from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm daily M – F (including a 30-minute non-paid lunch break). Job duties could occasionally require some overtime and must be approved prior to working.


Physical Requirements

  • Requires regular lifting, which may include up to 30 pounds in a single load.
  • Requires working at elevations which includes climbing ladders.
  • Involves a combination of indoor and outdoor activities. Outdoor activities may have to be completed during inclement weather conditions.


Employment Terms

  • Full time, Non-Exempt position.
  • Salary range: $24.00 per hour, $49,920 annually.
  • Excellent benefits package including medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance.
  • 2 weeks paid vacation or more depending on position.
  • Full-time employees receive 160 hours of sick leave upon hire then earn eight hours of sick leave per month.
  • 9 paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.
