Job Purpose:
The Area Business Leader – Eye Care (ABL) is responsible for the performance of the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation (NPC) approved Ophthalmology portfolio within the territories that comprise the area (district). The Area Business Leader is responsible for leading a team of Eye Care Sales Specialists in this defined geography. The Area Business Leader is required to lead, mentor, and develop team members to deliver sales results that meet/exceed objectives while also establishing strong professional relationships with key partners, target physician groups and key institutions. The Area Business Leader also ensures that business activity is consistent with Novartis’ compliance and legal standards.

Your Key Responsibilities:
  • Hire, train, mentor and develop Eye Care Sales Specialists.
  • Establish strong professional relationships with key partners, target physician groups and key institutions.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for each specialist and develop mentoring plans as appropriate.
  • Implement compensation programs to effectively reward integrity-based, dedication and desired leadership behaviors.
  • Effectively lead performance of Sales Specialists in the community setting.
  • Build strong, cross-functional relationships to demonstrate Novartis’ expertise to accomplish business goals and customer objectives.
  • Grow volume and market share to meet and exceed business goals.
  • Direct field activities and resource allocation to improve business results.

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary:
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $144,000 and $237,600 a year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Minimum requirements

What You’ll Bring to the Role:
  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in Life Sciences, Pharmacy, or business-related field).
  • Current pharmaceutical/biotech sales manager with 2+ year’s management experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in sophisticated selling environments.
  • Proven leadership of teams passionate about key account management/selling experience with large customers, academic medical centers & complex Systems of Care (SoC).
  • This is a remote position that will support a sales team in an assigned region. The region covers 6 states that includes CO, AZ, NM, TX, KS, and WY. Candidate must reside within territory, or within a reasonable daily commuting distance of 50 miles from territory boarder. Ability to travel 60-80% over a broad geography is required, with the ability to drive and/or fly within the territory. No relocation assistance available. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Extensive experience and success leading sales teams in promotion to large ophthalmology practices, Independent Practice Associations (IPAs), Integrated Delivery Network, and System of Care (SoC) Customers.

Leveling Guidelines:
The position will be filled at level commensurate with experience.

Area Business Leader I:
  • Internal: Completed SMDP, and current Novartis Sales Associate with 2+ years’ experience of pharma sales.
  • External: Current pharma/biotech sales manager with 2+ years of sales management experience.
Area Business Leader II:
  • Internal: Current Novartis Sales Associate, with 4+ years of pharmaceutical/biotech sales management experience who were formerly first line Sales Managers within the last two years at Novartis or prior company.
  • External: Current pharma/biotech sales manager with 4+ years of sales management experience.
Senior Area Business Leader:
  • Internal: Current Novartis Sales Associate, with 8+ years of pharmaceutical/biotech sales management experience who were formerly first line Sales Managers within the last two years at Novartis or prior company.
  • External: Current pharma/biotech sales manager with 8+ years of sales management experience.
