Job Summary

Twin Pine Bison Company is seeking an arborist to implement forest management projects on private lands in the Wheatland, WY area. This position will be responsible for forest management project planning and execution, as well as the protection and maintenance of the forests, natural resources, and intensive work on fire mitigation. Additionally, the forestry technician will work directly with Ranch staff and other partners to identify projects and make recommendations about feasibility and implementation.

The ideal candidate will be an outdoors person, able to work in isolation or in a team environment. A forestry technician should be prepared to work in a wide range of positions, from the scientific collection and study of data to the management of forested land and private recreational areas.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills

  • 2 - 4 years’ experience with tree care, landscaping, forestry or a related field;
  • An associate or bachelor’s degree in arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, environmental science, or equivalent preferred;
  • Professional licensure or certification as a tree expert or arborist preferred;
  • A class “B” commercial driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 120 days is required.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of tree maintenance and management;
  • Knowledge of industry safety standards and standard practices are required;
  • Proficient in rope and saddle climbing, use of climbing spikes (spurs, gaffs), modern climbing and rigging tools/techniques;
  • Interest in working outdoors year-round in all weather conditions;
  • Experience working with GIS-integrated data collection software/hardware preferred.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record;
  • Proficient computer skills desired with ability to maintain and access accurate records;
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Work to help promote a positive, respectful, energetic, efficient, and motivated team environment.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure safety protocols are followed at all times and support a safety oriented environment;
  • Implementing work zone safety procedures;
  • Perform all aspects of arboriculture, including tree climbing, pruning related to forest management activities, rigging, cabling and bracing, flagging and removal of hazardous trees, tree identification;
  • Operate equipment used for arboriculture;
  • Maintain equipment used for arboriculture, including hand tools, chainsaws, chippers, and aerial lifts;
  • Provide recommendations on tree management;
  • Ability to respond and answer questions and concerns from ranch ownership and staff;
  • Perform strenuous labor in all types of weather;
  • Work independently as well as with others.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions;
  • Exposure to various types of machinery noise - some levels are excessive;
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals;
  • Exposure to heavy vehicle traffic areas;
  • Ability to to climb at least 40’ up a rope and climb a tree;
  • Stamina and strength enough to lift and/or move 50 - 75 lbs.;
  • Vision enough to perform functions such as identifying materials necessary to complete maintenance on equipment and grounds and to operate vehicles and equipment;
  • Manual dexterity enough to operate tools, vehicles and equipment;
  • Flexibility enough to bend, twist and reach as to load and unload equipment, supplies or tools;
  • Ability to move over rough, uneven and rocky surfaces in performance of grounds maintenance;
  • Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continuously over extended periods of time.
