POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lifeguard Manager will assure the safety of all aquatic participants in and around the pool area, maintain a safe pool environment, provide lifeguard and safety training, and assist with scheduling and managing lifeguards. The Lifeguard Manager will be responsible for administrative support for the aquatic department in various roles but foremost in the capacity assigned by the Aquatic Director. In the absence of the Aquatic Director, the Lifeguard Manager will supervise all functions in the pool area. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Function as head lifeguard and lead teacher, guarding and teaching a minimum of 25 hours per week.
  • Approximately 15 hours per week will be applied to administrative duties such as time sheets, returning phone calls and emails, and scheduling lifeguards and instructors.
  • Conducts orientation of new staff members to the YMCA aquatics environment.
  • Supports the Aquatic Director in the creation and delivery of department schedules, employee engagement activities, facility communications, management of branch activity listings in ACTIVE, and statistical reporting for aquatic programs.
  • Maintains current aquatic certifications.
  • Supervises aquatics personnel.
  • Inspects on a regular basis the pool, pool area, equipment and supplies and reports any concerns immediately.
  • Maintains effective & positive relationships with the staff, members and participants.
  • Attends all staff meetings, association/branch trainings and participates in association/branch events as required.
  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local, American Red Cross and YMCA health and safety regulations as well as current ADA guidelines.
  • Maintains all Association and American Red Cross standards and guidelines while ensuring that updated documentation is met and available at all times.
  • Partners with Central Maintenance to ensure proper maintenance of pools. Secures and schedules pool facilities. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance. Enters work orders into Facility Dude as soon as any maintenance issue is recognized.
  • Along with the branch Aquatics Director and other LGIs on staff, conducts monthly in-services. vat drops and zone validations to ensure compliance with American Red Cross and YMCA requirements.
  • Ensures all YMCA Swims Instructor certifications remain current at all times.
  • Conducts trainings including but not limited to lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for all branch staff.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required and updates policies when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One to two years or experience as a lifeguard, swim instructor, LGI, or coordinator is preferred. Experience in a YMCA aquatics department is strongly preferred.
  • Certifications in YMCA Swim Instructor, CPR-Pro, AED, Emergency O2 and First Aid are required. American Red Cross lifeguard certification required and must be maintained; ARC Lifeguard Instructor preferred and must obtain within 3 months of hire and maintained.
  • Candidates must possess leadership skills with the capacity to rally a team around a goal.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills are required.
