Position Overview

Under general supervision, inspects honey bee colonies for diseases and parasites, Africanized bees or other nuisances to ensure compliance with the Illinois Bees & Apiaries Act; investigates the source of infection or infestation in an assigned area; recommends treatment of or participates in the abatement of nuisance colonies; demonstrates methods for controlling or preventing the spread of diseases and parasites, Africanized bees or other nuisances. This position will primarily service the following counties: Piatt, Macon, Moultrie, Shelby, Fayette, Effingham, Marion, Clay, Jefferson and Wayne County.

Job Responsibilities

  • Inspects honeybee colonies for diseases and parasites, Africanized bees, or other nuisances to ensure compliance with the Illinois Bees & Apiaries Act.
  • Investigates the source of infection or infestation in an assigned area.
  • Recommends treatment of or participates in the abatement of nuisance colonies.
  • Demonstrates methods for controlling or preventing the spread of diseases and parasites, Africanized bees or other nuisances.
  • Inspection of honeybee colonies showing Africanized traits/nuisances.
  • Inspection of honeybee colonies for disease and parasites.
  • Inspection of honeybee colonies and equipment for the purpose of transport either interstate or intrastate.
  • Inspection of honeybee colonies that have been without inspection for at least 3 (three) calendar years.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Requires high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:
Requires a working knowledge of apiculture and handling honeybees.
Requires an elementary knowledge of bee diseases and parasites.
Requires an ability to communicate effectively with beekeepers, supervisors and others.

Conditions of Employment

Requires the ability to maintain a driver's license and occasionally drive long distances.

Requires the ability to lift at least 60 pounds and occasionally walk extended distances.

Requires residency in one of the following counties: Piatt, Macon, Moultrie, Champaign, Shelby, Fayette, Effingham, Marion, Clay, Jefferson or Wayne County.

Candidates would need to have an understanding of The Illinois Bee and Apiaries Act and the Department’s role in controlling diseases and parasites in colonies. This is not a permanent position and hours vary depending on work assignments. This is a temporary contractual position for March 2023-March 2024. Contractual work can be terminated at any time during the contract.
