Typical Working Schedule
University hours are 7:45-4:30 Monday-Friday. This position requires flexibility in scheduling hours to adapt to changing work conditions related to dairy needs. There is an expectation of some weekend/evening and holiday work as needed.

Position Summary
The Dairy Enterprise Animal Care Technician II reports to the Dairy Enterprise Manager and is responsible for assisting with the management and husbandry of the dairy herd in the Dairy Learning Center. The individual will also assist with other livestock enterprises on the Mann Valley Farm. The individual will perform and assist with daily operations on the Laboratory Farm including milking, feeding and general animal husbandry and follow animal care, animal welfare and IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) rules and regulations.

Responsibilities
70%
Milk cows (harvest milk)
  • Milk cows properly, efficiently and in a timely manner,
  • Maintain high levels of sanitation and cleanliness,
  • Maintain high milk quality – low SCC (Somatic Cell Count), low SPC (Standard Plate Count), no antibiotics and properly cooled.
Feed livestock (calculate feed amounts & operate feeding equipment)
  • Formulate feed ingredients to mix and deliver to animals,
  • Measure and calculate feed consumption and feed efficiency,
  • Assist with implementing the nutrient management plan for the farm.
General animal husbandry
  • Handle animals in a gentle manner compliant with welfare guidelines,
  • Detect estrus and assist with reproductive protocols in cattle,
  • Maintain increased calf health and growth record systems,
  • Maintain computerized records in the dairy enterprises as instructed,
  • Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of animals,
  • Plan the pen moves, vaccinations, calf weaning, and other tasks that need to be accomplished.

Assist with the management of the dairy and livestock enterprises
  • Operate farm machinery and computerized feeding equipment,
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of farm equipment,
  • Manage the compost bedded pack,
  • Maintain the Laboratory Farm facilities as a clean, organized, and safe environment for use as instructional laboratories,
  • Train students in dairy animal care, animal reproduction protocols and handling,
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in dairy or animal science or agricultural related discipline
  • Considerable knowledge of and experience with dairy herd management
  • Ability to perform necessary and needed daily operations of the dairy facility including milking, feeding, and care of the dairy herd
  • Knowledge of and experience in use of sophisticated and basic scientific equipment
  • Ability to safely, and effectively, operate farm equipment
  • Perform routine maintenance of the dairy area and equipment as needed
  • Strong problem solving, analytic and organizational skills
  • Self-starting abilities are essential
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license which would permit Wisconsin certification to drive University vehicles.
  • Physical ability to lift 50lbs and successfully pass a post-offer employment test
