Notre Dame Research's (NDR's) Freimann Life Science Center is currently recruiting an Animal Husbandry Technician. The Animal Husbandry Technician (AHT) has primary responsibility for the day-to-day care and husbandry of laboratory animals used in research and teaching. The AHT must have or acquire knowledge of a variety of animal species including their natural behaviors and the environmental requirements. The AHT must have or develop a working knowledge of animal welfare regulations and current industry standards. The AHT will have the opportunity to assist in breeding lines of genetically manipulated rodents and learning advanced life support systems for species commonly housed at the University of Notre Dame. The AHT must have the ability to work autonomously as part of a diverse team to meet the needs of the program. Excellent communication skills, the ability to follow detailed instructions and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential.

Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for daily animal husbandry which includes: assessing the health of the animals by daily observations, ensuring adequate feed and/or water, sanitary primary enclosure, maintaining the animal rooms through proper cleaning procedures, and recording and reporting any abnormalities seen in the animals or in the environmental conditions of the room in accordance with relevant standard operating procedures. Must rotate weekend work with staff.

  • Must cross-train in all areas for husbandry and basic animal procedures as a means to cover for other team members when need arises or as professional development. This may include aquatics and/or breeding colony activities.

  • Must participate in cage sanitization and/or sterilization and staging activities to ensure requisite numbers of clean caging is available for all animals.

  • Must have or develop skills to administer veterinary treatments as needed or euthanize animals as required.

  • Attend continuing education opportunities and complete on-line education modules as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience in animal care and husbandry through personal or professional experience. Relevant experience may be drawn from diverse animal work such as 4-H, animal-related club activities or time spent caring for various species. All animal experience will be considered. Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with a diverse audience. Adherence to written procedures and attention to detail.

Must pursue AALAS certification within first 18 months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Evidence of commitment to team success and attention to detail are preferred.
