The Alumni Associate, King Conservation Science Scholars (“KCSS”) contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society (“CZS”) by engaging teens in the Society’s mission both at the zoo and in the communities it serves, including generating consistent, positive exposure for the Society through community relations and outreach, identifying/communicating with/involving community leadership in CZS programs, and representing the institution to diverse constituencies. The primary goal for this position is to foster deeper relationships between students throughout and beyond the Chicagoland area and the natural world.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • With the assistance of the KCSS Manager, plan, coordinate, and attend events, meetings, or other activities hosted by the King Conservation Science Scholars Alumni Network.
  • Manage the administrative operations of the King Conservation Science Scholars Alumni Network, including but not limited to recordkeeping and alumni expectations.
  • Develops, sustains, and strengthens King Scholar Alumni relationships beyond the KCSS Program.
  • In collaboration with the Alumni Chairperson of the KCSS Teen Leadership Board of Directors, evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of programs and services offered to alumni and recommend improvements or changes.
  • Maintain consistent communication with King Scholar alumni through the quarterly Alumni Network Newsletter, reminder messages and the promotion of the annual King Scholar Alumni Celebration.
  • Serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the King Scholar Alumni Network Newsletter.
  • Other related duties as assigned to assure successful achievement of Society objectives.

Position Requirements and Specifications

The requirements for this position include the following:
  • Graduate of the King Conservation Science Scholars Program at Brookfield Zoo or similar youth engagement community program required.
  • High school diploma or (GED) equivalent required.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbal, written, and listening skills.
  • Ability to sustain relationships, maintain rapport and work effectively with a wide range of diverse students and communities.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel required.
  • Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.

Preferred Qualifications: Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency is a plus.

Must represent the Society in a professional manner at all times. Incumbent works closely with other staff to plan and provide support for programs and operations. Individual will be expected to be present and visible at Society events in the community and/or for other events and audiences as requested. Work schedules are based on the needs of the operation. Some local travel around the Chicagoland area is required; other travel may be required.
