TITLE: Tutor

PERFORMANCE PROFILE SOURCE: Youth Development Professional

DEPARTMENT: Programs

JOB CLASSIFICATION: Part Time

REPORTS TO: Unit Director

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Tutor position works with our Project Learn program to implement activities, supervise selected members and evaluate activity outcomes within a specific program area, supporting our priority outcome areas of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character and Citizenship.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Leadership

  • Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes and is conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of each member to ensure success.
  • Promote and stimulate program participation for all members.
  • Provide guidance and role modeling to members and other program staff.
  • Communicate and interact with members, parents, staff, and community.

Program Development and Implementation

  • Effectively implement and administer programs, services and activities for all members and visitors.
  • Know and effectively communicate the Boys & Girls Club of Johnson City / Washington County mission and vision.
  • Assess members throughout the organization and identifies children most at-risk academically.
  • Design & implement academic interventions utilizing research based methodology in reading and/or math.
  • Differentiate instruction based on assessment data available.
  • Document interventions and progress on each child served by the position.
  • Work with the operations team to guide and monitor progress of each child.
  • Provide pre and post-assessment data to the operations team.
  • Provide small group or individual instruction as needed with multiple interactions per child served per week.
  • Maintain appropriate records and follow required practices and procedures relating to records management.
  • Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Help administer informal and formal academic assessments throughout the program cycle.
  • Evaluate and assess member progress against instructional objectives developed by the State of Tennessee.
  • Knowledge of education, research, trends, and best practices.
  • Assist in the preparation of data for all necessary reports.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • May participate in special programs and/ or events.
  • May be required to drive club van.
  • All other duties as assigned by supervisor.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/ provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/ instructions; instruct, and advise/ counsel.

External: Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, member’s parents and other to assist in resolving problems.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Minimum of 1 year of college level courses in an education field required
  • Experience in working with children. Preference will be given to experience in a Boys & Girls or similar setting
  • Knowledge of youth development stages and appropriate age related activities
  • Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems
  • Ability to deal with the general public
  • Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth
  • Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications
  • Valid Driver’s License, preferably TN license issue

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must have reliable means of transportation
  • Must be able to move equipment and materials short distances in the range of 50-75ft and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to handle being in a hot, dusty environment and cold/wet environment
  • Must be able to move freely and can be walking, sitting, or standing at any given point during the day. Job duties include operation of computers and office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
