Department Overview:
The Division of General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics is seeking a Clinician Educator to work with a team of health care providers and collaborate to achieve clinical care goals in our addiction medicine program. The successful candidate must have demonstrated ability to work with a team of health care providers and collaborate to achieve clinical care goals. Our practice also includes innovative models for delivering care to people with substance use disorder, integrating addictions care into general medical settings, and improving care systems overall.

The successful applicant may tailor this position to include other important addiction medicine service, research, and teaching opportunities, such as serving as core faculty for our telementoring ECHO programs (Extension Community Health Outreach) to build addiction medicine capacity across Oregon and serving as study clinician for NIH-funded trials.
Function/Duties of Position:
Patient Care:
  • Perform substance use disorder assessments for hospitalized and outpatient adults
  • Tailor a patient-centered treatment plan that may include but is not limited to integration of behavioral health care (in hospital and after discharge), medications, and referral to outpatient SUD treatment.
  • Provide patient and caregiver teaching regarding substance use disorders, treatment plans, and follow-up care.
  • Guide inpatient teams to prescribe medications, including but not limited to buprenorphine/ naloxone, methadone, naltrexone for treatment opioid use disorder, and an array of medication treatments for alcohol use disorders.
  • Document patient care in a clear and appropriately focused manner utilizing EPIC EHR.
  • Assess and manage, and coordinate care with primary care clinics and community SUD treatment providers
  • Collaborate with all members of the patient’s care team, including interdisciplinary IMPACT; OHSU staff nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, and physicians and advance practice providers across an array of disciplines (e.g. general medicine, orthopedics, general surgery); community primary care providers; infusion pharmacists; and skilled nursing rehabilitation providers and case managers.
Education:
  • Participate in Addiction Medicine teaching opportunities, including but not limited to medical students, residents, addiction medicine fellows, and community providers. Specifically, this will include (but is not limited to):
    • Supervising internal medicine and family medicine residents and the addiction medicine fellow while they rotate on IMPACT or outpatient settings
    • Providing lectures in the School of Medicine, if applicable
Performance/System Improvement:
  • Participate and lead Addiction Medicine continuous quality improvement efforts across OHSU and OHSU Partners
  • Partner with Addiction Medicine leadership working across local, regional and state efforts to improve SUD care locally, regionally, and nationally.
Research:

The OHSU Section of Addiction Medicine houses robust addiction medicine research programs. While the primary duties for this position involve service and teaching, applicants are encouraged to pursue scholarly activities. Faculty may take advantage of opportunities to participate in a diverse range of existing clinical trials and health services research activities, based on their interests and training. The Section and IMPACT specifically are involved in studies through the NIDA Clinical Trials Network.
Required Qualifications:
  • MD or DO
  • Certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) in addiction medicine
  • New program graduates considered
  • Knowledge of substance use disorder assessments and treatment.
  • Ability to manage heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with members of a diverse interprofessional team.
  • Ability to develop and delivery educational materials, including giving lectures and developing slide sets.
  • Proficient in use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing, and spreadsheet software.
  • Regular and consistent attendance at work.
REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSES:
  • Current Oregon Medical License prior to start date
  • Addiction Medicine board certified
  • DEA License and X-license
Preferred Qualifications:
  • American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) or American Board of Preventive Medicine-Addiction Medicine Fellowship trained
  • 2 years practice experience. Prefer experience working with adults with substance use disorders, experience working in the substance use treatment settings (including methadone treatment program) and/or community mental health and/or in hospital settings.
  • Strong leadership and teaching experience. Experience working with diverse stakeholders to create systems change.

  • Deep understanding of the social determinants of health and how they influence patients’ experience and care.
  • Strong interest and experience in program development and evaluation.
  • Strong educator skills.
