Position Summary:

This position is responsible for planning, organizing, developing and directing the overall operation of the Activity Department in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations and as may be directed by the Executive Director to ensure the on-going program of activities is designed and carried out to provide for the interests and the physical, mental and psychosocial needs of the residents. Advances the value that the resident comes first. The employee values the Community as the residents’ home and works to create attributes of home and models person centered care.

  • Represents and demonstrates the PMMA mission while carrying out job duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Responsible for the overall delivery of resident centered programming in accordance with policies, practices and procedures which reflect person centered care, evidence based practice and current rules and regulations. Completes written and oral reports/recommendations as needed regarding the operations of the activities department. Develops methods for coordinating activities with other resident services to ensure the continuity of the resident’s plan of care.
  • Models, teaches and utilizes effective communication skills such as active listening, giving meaningful feedback, communicating ideas clearly, dealing with emotional behavior, conflict resolution and understanding the role of diversity in communication. Recognizes one’s own and others’ attitudes, values and expectations about aging and their impact on care of older adults and their families.
  • Maintains a reference library of material, regulations, activity plans, etc., necessary for complying with current standards and regulations that will provide assistance in maintaining quality resident centered activity participation.
  • Conducts individual resident assessments to determine activity preferences and usual customary routine. Evaluates residents for adaptive equipment or special resources to assist or enhance activity participation.
  • Participates in resident plan of care meetings. Develops and documents resident activity plans of care identifying resident needs and goals. Revises and updates plans and assessments as necessary (at least quarterly).
  • Participates in Community surveys, inspections and investigations as necessary.
  • Develops a plan of correction for activities deficiencies noted during survey inspections and provides a written copy to the Executive Director.
  • Ensures appropriate stock of supplies for use in carrying out activities.
  • Assists in preparing and planning the activities budget for approval by the Executive Director. Maintains records of departmental expenditures as required and makes adjustments in order to conform to budget.
  • Manages the selection, training, evaluation, retention, budgeting and staffing requirements to meet the needs of the residents.
  • Initiates, serves and/or participates in various committees and meetings of the Community as necessary or as required by administration (i.e. Infection Control, QA, Care Plan, Safety, management, departmental, etc.). Evaluates and implements recommendations and provides reports as required.
  • Ensures activities staff adheres to respective safety, infection control, safe food handling and sanitation policies and procedures. Handles concerns or incidents timely and according to established procedures.
  • Reviews and investigates employee concerns, complaints and incidences or accidents in accordance with policy and procedure and consults with Human Resource Director and/or Executive Director as to outcomes.
  • Makes rounds to ensure activities staff is performing required duties and following appropriate procedures. Checks and ensures needed equipment and supplies are available and working properly.
  • Ensures the activities staff is knowledgeable of resident’s rights. Reviews complaints made by residents and resident families and resolves concerns.
  • Advances the value that residents come first by reporting accidents, incidents, resident complaints and changes in the resident’s condition.
  • Ensures assigned staff follows established universal precautions, safety and sanitation procedures and regulations. Appropriately manages reported occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials and hazardous chemicals. Follows established infection control and isolation precautions and procedures. Reports missing/illegible labels and SDSs to the Director of Environmental Services or other designated person. Ensures staff adheres to fire, smoking, equipment and safety policies and procedures.
  • Protects the residents and PMMA by not disclosing or using resident health information for any purpose other than treatment for the resident, payment and operations.
  • Values and respects the choices and preferences of residents and works to create attributes of home, with emphasis on person centered care.
  • Upholds resident rights and confidentiality. Creates and supports a physical environment which is accessible and supports privacy, independence and comfort.

Requirements of Position:

Education, Experience and/or Training (i.e., License, Certificate and/or Registration):

  • AD/SSD Certification.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Choose an item..
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years college course work in therapeutic recreation desired.
  • Therapeutic recreation specialist or activities professional licensed by the state desired.
  • One year of experience in a health care.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must function independently when necessary, demonstrating flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with the residents, staff and support agencies.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with staff, residents, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Must be able to lead and direct staff and work harmoniously.
  • Must be able to plan, organize, develop, implement and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.
  • Must have patience, positive disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult situations.
  • Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Physical or Mental Demands:

  • This position is classified as Medium Work for physical exertion requirements. Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Periods of prolonged sitting, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, reaching above, at or below shoulder level, kneeling, crouching and twisting may occur.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this Community that may include a medical and physical examination.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
  • Moves intermittently during working shift.
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions.

Working Environment:

  • Works beyond normal working shift, and/or subject to call back, when necessary and in other positions, temporarily, when needed.
  • Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the work shift.
  • Is subject to exposure to dust, disinfectants, chemicals and other air contaminants.
  • May be exposed to illnesses and diseases, including Tb and the AIDS and hepatitis B viruses.

Risk Exposure to Blood/Body Fluids:

It is highly unlikely that while performing the essential functions of this position you will be exposed to blood or body fluids.
