Accounting Manager

San Diego Youth Services seeks a Accounting Manager in our Fiscal Department to be based at our Point Loma Campus. This is a full-time & exempt position reporting to the CFO.

We provide safe places to live and long-term solutions through shelter, foster homes, community centers and housing to more than 28,000 youth every year at 100+ community and school locations. Through prevention, early intervention and treatment, we also help youth before they need higher levels of care or become homeless.

San Diego Youth Services has long provided foster homes and adoption support services for families considering adopting a youth in the foster care system.
  • Help youth develop life skills. In addition to a range of safe and stable housing options, we offer support to help youth develop the independent living skills necessary to become self-sufficient and keep off the streets.
  • Promote overall health and well-being. Early intervention and care for the whole child are critical. We provide a broad continuum of services to help youth overcome trauma and challenges that put them at risk, including case management, counseling, mental health treatment and educational support and resources.

SDYS has a staff of approximately 215 employees and 80 volunteers working across San Diego County and an annual budget of approximately $22 million.

CONTEXT OF THE POSITION

Responsible for the financial statement assessments, month-end close, general ledger, reconciliation of bank accounts and other balance sheet accounts, etc., and continuing audit compliance. Also responsible for establishing and implementing systems relating to the agency responsibilities as a fiscal agent for other entities. Implement, maintain, and review accounting software system (integrated accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger). Manage and supervise staff.

Essential functions include:

1. Oversee the day-to-day operations of all accounting functions. Plan and work with the staff (employees and volunteers) of the fiscal department. Supervise the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable functions and staff.

2. Provide training relating to various fiscal positions and functions, including payroll.

3. Analyze and update agency policies and procedures in regard to Fiscal impacts

4. Maintain data collection and contract compliance records. Maintain all files relevant to job responsibilities. Determine and maintain updated procedures for all tasks in job description.

5. Analyze and ensure compliance with all fiscal contractual obligations.

6. Responsible for month-end and year-end closing procedures.

7. Assist CFO in preparation of annual agency audit, sub-contract audit, and work closely with auditors gathering and preparing information as needed.

8. Manage bank balance on all cash accounts.

9. Confirm financial status by monitoring revenue & expenses, coordinating collection, consolidation and evaluation by financial date; prepare special reports.

10. Guide other departments by searching and interpreting accounting policy, applying observations and recommendations to operating issues.

11. Maintain financial security by establishing internal controls.

12. Analyze, prepare and provide monthly financial statements and balance sheet with analyses to CFO.

13. Comply with OMB A-133 and FASB 116 & 117 guidelines.

14. Prepare the annual documents for the County Assessors office (Claim for welfare exemption and business property statements).

15. Update the fixed asset listing and depreciation expense.

16. Perform other related duties as assigned.

PREFERRED PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

1. Master degree in accounting/finance; California licensed CPA preferred.

2. Five years accounting experience in all aspects of accounting preferably with social service community based organization, and/or non-profits.

3. Familiarity with multi-level (federal, state, county, city, United Way, and AFDC, etc.) contractor regulations.

4. Strong computer and accounting application knowledge.

5. Must be able to work with and represent a culturally and ethnically diverse community.

6. Must be able to work efficiently remotely and manage a tele-working team; be able to manage the safety and well-being of staff, volunteers, and clients within the parameters provided by the agency, government and health authorities on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Salary Range: $100k-$105k/Annually
