Job Description: This position is responsible for general accounting duties including recording transactions, reconciling accounts, and reporting financial information. The General Ledger Accountant reports directly to the Assistant Comptroller.

Job Duties:

General Duties:

  • Adhere to all College policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to State and Federal laws and regulation.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with college personnel, students and the community.
  • Attend to details and perform at high rate of accuracy.
  • Upgrade skills level and performance through professional development.
  • Insure the integrity of financial control procedures and proper accounting measures.

Specific Duties:

  • Work with various departments to ensure proper posting of deposits and expense including the review of the cashier sessions of the Campus Business offices.
  • Process bank transactions including stop payments, direct deposit reversals, and wire transfers.
  • Review and reconcile the general ledger accounts monthly as assigned.
  • Verify the accuracy of Accounts Payable checks prior to release by the college.
  • Assist with the travel reimbursements and prepare annual travel reports.
  • Assist with the year-end close of the college’s fiscal year.
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual MS Budget Request as needed.
  • Submittal of reports to the College’s external Auditor.
  • Assist with the preparation of the semiannual and annual financial statements.
  • Maintain the college’s capital assets and depreciation reports and record appropriate entries.
  • Maintain documentation on existing account processes and procedures and propose improvements as deemed necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Assistant Comptroller.

Mandatory Qualifications:

(M1) Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or other business related degree; (M2) Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to work in networked environment; (M3) Detailed oriented; (M4) Excellent organizational skills; (M5) Effective written and interpersonal communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

(D1) Masters degree in accounting or business; (D2) Two years of accounting experience; (D3) Experience working at a community college or university; (D4) Experience working with an enterprise resource planning system (ERP); (D5) Experience with the State of MS accounting and procurement system.
