Job Title: Tutor

What You Do

“Sunshiners” are tutors AND mentors that address the needs of the whole child, providing social and emotional development and support in addition to their academic needs. Sunshiners are responsible for creating individual and tailored lesson plans for each of the students they work with to meet specific academic goals in each session. As long as the intended academic need is met, tutors have full autonomy to reach that goal in the way they feel is best.

The Basics to Get it Done

Education: Bachelor’s Degree or higher (or in progress)

“Practice what you Preach” As advocates for education, our Sunshiner’s should also share and exhibit a passion for higher education. Anyone with, or in the progress of obtaining, a Bachelor’s degree or higher is an ideal candidate

Work Experience: A minimum of two years in teaching/tutoring or a related field, and a year of relatable mentorship experience.

This is not an “entry level” job. Our tutors should have the confidence to create their own lesson plans tailored to the individual needs of each student they work with and be comfortable discussing the unique and complex emotional needs that children often experience

Availability: Tutoring hours are flexible, and occur after school during the week and throughout the day on the weekends.

Technical Requirements:

Access to a computer or smart device with a webcam and microphone, along with reliable internet access

For in person positions, access to a reliable means of transportation.

Ability to pass a level 2 background check allowing work with minors

How You’re Paid

Tutors with The Sunshine Method are contractors working on a part time basis. Our pay scales are dependent on the needs of the child, not the experience of the Tutor. Student priority levels may vary, and may be at a higher rate depending on their needs.

  • Remote/Online: $15-18/hr
  • In Person: Starts at $22/hr

Tutors are not reimbursed for mileage, time spent lesson planning, or time spent uploading required documentation. As independent contractors, however, costs related to travel and materials can be written off as business expenses on your taxes.

Like most jobs in education, we cannot pay for the true value of what you are providing:

  • Helping a young person to make positive changes in their lives
  • Igniting a passion and curiosity for life long learning
  • Making connections with children that will change yours and their lives forever

But How You ARE Rewarded

  • Gain lesson planning and curriculum building skills
  • Networking with like minded individuals
  • Growth and development of interpersonal and other soft skills
  • Expansion of perspectives through people with diverse backgrounds
  • Grass roots, impactful change to the education of students in your local and national communities
  • Flexible schedule and autonomy to choose the students you work with
  • Ability to work from home (Remote Jobs Only)
  • Eligible for pay increase after one year
  • A supplemental income that is both rewarding and fulfilling
  • Equal Opportunity Employer
