Farmingdale State College seeks to hire a full-time Counselor who will advise and serve Farmingdale students as a professional staff member in the college's Research Aligned Mentorship Program (RAM). The RAM program at Farmingdale State College is an extremely prestigious program originally founded by a US Department of Education initiative to support historically under-resourcedâ polulations, low- income and first-generation students to embolden them with a passion for research and applied learning as a means to keep them on track through their college careers. The RAM Program currently has over 800 RAM student scholars benefiting from additional advisement, coursework, and special workshops and events. RAM student scholars are paired with a faculty mentor or off-campus supervisor to engage in hands-on research, internship, or project-based learning experience. The RAM counselor will work closely with the 5 members of the RAM staff and will collaborate with administrators, faculty, staff, and offices across the College. The academic counselor will serve the RAM student scholars by:

Advisement:

  • Offering holistic academic advisement to RAM scholars in several different majors and disciplines.
  • Advising and registering a cohort of second-year and continuing upper-class RAM scholars.
  • Closely tracking and monitoring student progress.
  • Acting as a student advocate and maintaining a student-centered approach.
  • Connecting RAM scholars to all available campus resources and support services.
  • Meeting with RAM scholars given early warning and probation notices and orchestrating follow-up.
  • Providing information, resources, and referrals on broad academic matters and special opportunities to RAM scholars.
  • Conducting workshops and preparing advisement materials and handbooks.

Teaching:

  • Teaching sections of the RAM Program curriculum; including, a 2-credit Introduction to Research Design and Methodology Course.

Research and Program Development:

  • Assisting with planning and setting up social and academic community building activities for RAM scholars.
  • Assist students in summer undergraduate research application preparedness and placement.
  • Assist in the development of student personal statements and resume for research and internship opportunities.
  • Plan and host events dedicated to student readiness for undergraduate research both on and off campus.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of Farmingdale's IGNITE Symposium and RAM's Summer Research Institute (SRI).
  • This Counselor will sustain partnerships with other individuals and offices (department chairs, faculty, tutoring center, writing center, disabilities services, financial aid, student affairs, athletics, veterans affairs, etc.) to assure that RAM scholars receive appropriate guidance and support.

Job Requirements:


MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree awarded by May 2023.
  • Experience serving as an academic advisor or counselor in Higher Education.
  • Experience with research (either professional or educational).
  • Knowledge of skills for academic success such as study habits, time management, and managing test anxiety.
  • Ability to counsel college students 1:1, assessing needs and offering guidance.
  • Ability to work with individuals and offices that serve students.
  • Experience working with populations who identify as low-income, first generation to go to college, and/or part of a historically under-resourced group.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred).
  • Familiarity with any student and course information software and degree audit tool (such as Banner and Degree Works).
  • Experience in program assessment and evaluation.
  • Experience teaching/facilitating in a higher education setting.
  • Excellent record keeping skills (using computer systems).

Additional Information:


This is a full-time UUP position.

  • For the first 10 working days, beginning Friday, March 3, 2023 and ending Thursday, March 16, 2023,â UUP Farmingdale applications will be given priority.
  • CLOSING DATE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS: Saturday, April 1, 2023
  • Salary: $55,000/year + $3,026 in downstate location pay = $58,026 Total Annual Compensation. Salary may increase commensurate with experience.
