Minimum Experience/Education
Master’s degree and academic advising experience in a higher education setting. A proficient use of computers (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and the Google suite of applications) is necessary and familiarity with current advising technologies. Also, experience managing large case loads of students is necessary.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Master’s degree preferably in a liberal arts and sciences area. Candidate must have a breadth of knowledge of the various liberal arts and sciences degrees. Candidate must also be attentive to detail, must be able to learn quickly, must possess strong organizational skills and has the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking. The candidate must manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as problem-solving skills are a must. Ability to interact effectively with undergraduate students, staff and faculty is required. A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements. Proficient use of computers (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and the Google suite of applications) is necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities
This is a temporary academic advisor position that will support academic advising in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences during the Summer 2023 New Student Orientation, an orientation program for new freshmen and new transfer students. The duties and responsibilities include the following:
  • Learn all relevant curriculum needed for incoming freshman and transfer students in CLAS disciplines, in particular Psychology among others.
  • Assist students in their development of a first-semester academic plan towards their degree. Must be able to provide course recommendations towards completion of their major as well as answer questions about the major, general education, course sequences, and assist students in creating their plans.
  • Understand and effectively develop students’ knowledge of university academic policies, regulations, guidelines, and deadlines and the curriculum requirements for the specific program(s) of study of the students being advised.
  • Evaluate whether it is necessary to refer a student to another office depending on the nature of the student’s question/needs and make such referrals using appropriate protocols to ensure students’ needs are being met.
  • Develop students’ knowledge of and their motivation to pursue the full range of curricular and co-curricular support services and engagement activities available at the University.
  • Understand and exploit the capabilities of the suite of academic advising technology-based systems used at the University. Effectively use these advising systems to proactively engage students to ensure degree program persistence and timely graduation.
  • Develop students’ abilities to use these systems and other relevant information to regularly evaluate one’s own progress toward academic goals and make appropriate behavioral and academic changes.

Other Work/Responsibilities
Assist academic departments, in particular Psychological Science, with new transfer student advising appointments during the new student orientation program. In addition, the employee will assist with responding to student questions during the New Student Orientation advising process.
