Spokane Community College (SCC) Adult Basic Education (ABE) Division seeks qualified candidates for consideration of employment in this annually contracted, tenure-track position located in Spokane, Washington. The division seeks an individual dedicated to teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to learners from diverse backgrounds and has demonstrated commitment to supporting students from historically underserved populations. ABE is a student-centered division that is a part of Spokane Community College and partners with Spokane Falls Community College and multiple community partners, including refugee and immigrant resettlement organizations, the region's K-12 system, local industries, and area community centers. The division provides educational services in multiple sites in the six-county region of Community Colleges of Spokane. A stable and cohesive faculty and staff is dedicated to serving the immigrant and refugee population with a vibrant, culturally responsive curriculum. As one of the largest adult education divisions in Washington State, SCC's Adult Education Division has a history of innovation, anti-racism, and risk- taking in our approach to student success.

Spokane Community College seeks qualified candidates for consideration of employment in this annually contracted, tenure track position for an ESL Instructor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares for and instructs, through multi-media education modes, classes in the discipline of English as a Second Language (ESL). Examples of the types of courses typically assigned include single level classes and/or multi-level classes that may have open enrollment with students from all six levels of Washington State English as a Second Language programming; assignments may be at off-campus centers and may include evening and/or weekend classes;
  • Provides availability and accessibility to students for purpose of academic consulting and support, in a manner appropriate to meet student needs, through a combination of scheduled office hours, e-mail accessibility or other effective means of responsive and timely communication;
  • Communicates expectations and establishes clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process; evaluates student progress and provides clear, timely feedback;
  • Participates in district, division, department, or general faculty meetings; in-service training; curriculum development; academic consulting; workshops or seminars; service on district or college councils or committees, or other activities within the scope of the position;
  • Complies with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; Follows established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, office support, student financial aid requirements, safety and health issues and related administrative processes;
  • Models professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions;
  • Supports and advances the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned;
  • In addition, faculty may:
    • Instruct courses in related disciplines based upon individual qualifications and expertise. Of particular interest are English, rights and responsibilities of citizenship and civic participation.
    • Direct the work of assigned work-study students and volunteers.
    • Advise student clubs or associations.
    • Complete required ABE paperwork to include enrollment forms, WABERS, and attendance.
    • Conduct CASAS pre-and post-assessments in accordance with program and state assessment policies.

COMPETENCIES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (Minimum Qualifications)
  • An earned Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Adult Education, or a closely related field from an accredited institution with emphasis and concentration in the teaching areas outlined above.
  • Previous experience equivalent to two or more full academic years of teaching ESL to adult refugees, immigrants, historically underserved, and/or multilingual populations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of inclusive teaching practices for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning and working environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Experience using technology and multi-modal instructional strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to assume leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing curriculum and/or training and assessment.
  • Acceptance of and willingness to support the role that community colleges serve in higher education, and specifically the mission, values, goals and objectives of the Community Colleges of Spokane.
  • Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution and the community/technical college system.

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (Desirable Qualifications)
  • Recent experience teaching ESL to adults in a classroom setting from preliterate to college level.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with colleagues in an innovative team-oriented program.
  • Experience with outcomes-based instruction and assessment.

CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a full-time, tenure track position with an entry level base salary (for a 175-day academic year contract) of $59,037 - $90,649 / year. Future advancement in base salary, up to the current maximum of $90,649, is based upon a combination of years of service accrued at our college and professional development activity.

Annual salary is comprised of base salary plus any combination of academic year overload contracts, summer effort contracts, project stipends, student club advising stipends, and/or department chair /program lead faculty stipends consistent with the provisions of the current collective bargaining agreement between CCS and the Association for Higher Education (AHE).

Faculty have potential to earn up to $129,585 (average annual salary paid to our 20 highest earning faculty during FY2022/23). Average annual faculty salary for FY 2022/23 (all faculty) was $84,641.

TOTAL COMPENSATION
: $75,037 - $109,735.

Total compensation is an estimate based upon adding the following amounts together:

  • Current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates, plus

The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the District to sponsor an H1-B visa. In addition, the Community Colleges of Spokane maintains a drug-free work environment and prohibits all smoking in the college buildings and state-owned vehicles. Must be able to successfully work in and promote a multicultural work and education environment.
