Major Responsibilities

Filer: repairs band saw and circular saw blades by performing the following duties:

  • Maintains blades and filing equipment to cut quality material in a straight and uniform manner.
  • Examines saw for defects. Cuts broken teeth from saw. Adjusts cutting width of teeth.
  • Forms teeth on saw blade by beveling joints on grinder and welding or brazing them together.
  • Brazes or welds cracks, straightens twists and kinks and hammers out imperfections in saw blade.
  • Computes number and angle of teeth to produce specified cut.
  • Clamps blade in saw filing machine and turns handwheel to adjust distance between teeth, angle of bevel, and depth of cut of file or abrasion wheel.
  • Checks saw for level, tension and back.
  • Prepares saw for swaging, shaping and sharpening; starts machine that automatically grinds and files saw teeth.
  • Ensures safe and operable saws are available to production.

Maintenance: installs, maintains, and repairs machinery, equipment, physical structures, pipe and electrical systems in sawmill by performing the following duties:

  • Assists with daily start-up operations of sawmill. Visually inspects and tests machinery and equipment.
  • Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction and discusses machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problem or repair machine.
  • Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery; changes saw blades, dowler knives, chipper knives.
  • Installs and repairs electrical apparatus, such as transformers and wiring, and electrical and electrical components of machinery and equipment.
  • Lay out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, and repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related equipment.
  • Repairs and maintains physical structure of building; fabricates and repairs counters, benches, partitions and other wooden structures.
  • Operates cutting torch or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
  • Installs, programs, or repairs automated machinery and equipment.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathe, grinder, drill, and milling machine to repair or fabricate machine parts, jigs and fixtures, and tools.

Foreman: covers the Wood Mill Manager on activities associated with establishing production schedules and ensureing that actual production meets scheduled requirements.

  • Works with wood mill staff on the effective manufacture, transfer and distribution of products.
  • Coordinates production operations with the requirements for finished products and the needs for materials and labor.
  • Drive key operational measurements; safety, cost, productivity, efficiency, fulfillment, on-time delivery & quality.
  • Works with maintenance staff in the operational support, upkeep, and repair of facilities required for warehouse/distribution operations.
  • Recommends equipment modification and upgrades to improve reliability and capacity.
  • Provides guidance to timber employees to achieve production goals and resolve issues.
