What you will do:
The Whey Production Manager is responsible to direct and oversee manufacturing of Whey, emphasizing safety, quality, and productivity. Responsibilities include production of Whey from the receipt of Whey through storage of the whey to assure products of the highest quality, while maximizing yields and maintaining cost efficient operations. This position provides the vision, leadership, and coaching needed to develop and maintain the competencies and performance of whey production employees.
Here’s a day in the life:

  • Develop a Whey manufacturing organization capable of producing desired business results for the production of premium whey
  • Responsible for the hiring, training, and retention of a high performing team in the whey manufacturing department
  • Responsible for setting, standardizing, and monitoring key process measures to improve efficiencies and reduce costs
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to enhance individual and team performance
  • Spot check production activities for compliance with safety, quality, and production guidelines
  • Audit and coordinate similar activities between shifts for consistency
  • Identify and implement training and career development opportunities for team members
  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with all other departments
  • Define and monitor standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Coordinate production based on input from the planning department
  • Review the previous day’s production and laboratory reports of whey analysis
  • Implement plans to correct any problems that are identified, determine where and why the problem occurred, and oversee specific corrective action
  • Control costs to budget by maintaining an efficient operation
  • Recommend/implement expense budgets
  • Accountable for establishing and maintaining a Continuous Improvement culture
  • Establish and maintain performance standards and Leader Standard Work
  • Define and monitor standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Audit company policies, procedures, and standards regularly to ensure compliance
  • Exemplify and teach problem solving skills using Continuous Improvement and Lean tools
  • Drive, facilitate, and document departmental continuous improvement efforts
  • Ensure compliance with USDA, ODA, FDA and other regulatory product safety requirements
  • Define and monitor standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Monitor compliance to applicable regulations or industry best practices
  • Coordinate quality control point testing and measures with QA
  • Implement plans to correct any problems that are identified, determine where and why the problem occurred, and oversee specific corrective action
  • Identify and coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance with the maintenance department
  • Sustain effective working relationship with maintenance and engineering
  • Promote life cycle, preventative, and predictive maintenance practices
  • Ensure departmental maintenance needs are addressed in a timely manner
  • Monitor ingredient and packaging inventories and communicate needs to the operations planning group
  • Review the previous day’s production reports and current production schedule
  • Monitor long range production schedule
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with whey delivery, Planning, IT, and all other company departments
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors and the general public
  • Communicate effectively
  • Utilize a computer with intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint
  • Act as a team player and be able to interact with staff at all levels of the company
  • Work under pressure, meet deadlines, and be flexible in working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrate excellent time-management skills with the ability to work independently with little supervision

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university in Food Science, Engineering, or Business Management (or related field); or five to ten years cheese/dairy manufacturing experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in leadership in food production with at least 3 - 5 years at a supervisor level
