General Description

The purpose of this job is to provide outreach and mediation services to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups to prevent violence.
This position works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.


Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.


  • Conducts outreach activities to gain trust of the community, influential individuals and the highest risk persons to help prevent shootings and violence, and to help high-risk persons.
  • Participates in all required Cure Violence trainings.
  • Meets and counsel’s high-risk individuals and groups on a daily basis to discuss issues.
  • Works as a member of a team to ensure that shootings are reduced.
  • Works to intervene in circumstances in which violence is likely, including possible retaliation.
  • Submits required reports on a weekly basis.
  • Works closely with management towards development of the Violence Prevention Plan.
  • Distributes public education materials within the community assigned.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • An in-depth knowledge of the focus areas and surrounding affected neighborhoods. Prior experience with high-risk street activity.
  • Possess basic computer skills.
  • Ability to perform accurate and timely documentation of client service delivery.
  • Ability to work effectively with high risk and gang involved youth/young adults and their families. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with school, criminal justice, and other program personnel.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and demonstrate good judgement in areas of responsibility.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes late evenings, weekends, and holidays, and may shift seasonally.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to tenth grade.


Physical Demands:

Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
