SUMMARY: A High School Head Coach must be committed to the personal development of each player on the roster. This includes developing the academic, social, emotional, and athletic aspects of each student athlete in the environment of a faith-based school. It also includes accurately evaluating each player’s skill level and personal learning style, coaching them according to their level and learning style, and teaching them maneuvers and techniques relating to the position in which the player is assigned. A Head Coach must also help students develop a competitive nature, teach them about ethical behavior and good sportsmanship, and assist in the development of leadership skills in alignment with our school’s core values.

SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

Head Coach is responsible for the management and supervision of athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship.

Directly supervise volunteers and assigned personnel.

Ensure that all assistant, volunteer, and sub-varsity coaches work together toward a common goal within the program and provide unity with a structured feeder system.

Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.

Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports.

In accordance with student code of conduct and student handbook, apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property.

Encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation at all times.

Oversee the process of cleaning, repairing and storing all athletic equipment.

Create and facilitate an off-season athlete development plan that includes, but is not limited to, a strength and conditioning program.

Disaggregate data to assess coaches and players. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of both the coaching program and player performance and make changes based on findings and the ongoing and individual needs of the program.

Continuously develop, re-evaluate, and rewrite game and practice plans to meet the needs of the team, specific students, and opponents.

Maintain a regular and dependable attendance record to ensure consistent, high-quality services to children and families.

Display strong communication, motivational, and organizational skills.

Regularly engage in professional development and provide opportunities for athletes and coaches to attend camps and clinics.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Use a variety of instructional techniques and technology to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes.

Work with other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes during the entire school year.

Instruct and advise students on MHSAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices and ensure that MHSAA and District guidelines are followed.

Teach and rehearse proper technique and safety procedures in all aspects of the program.

Develop student athletes’ public appearance and brand by assisting them with public speaking and interview techniques.

RELATIONSHIP-BUILDING RESPONSIBILITIES

Create a program that combines structure and discipline with a positive motivational style.

Establish and maintain open communication and a harmonious relationship with students, staff, parents, administration, and the community.

Build a working relationship with the NCAA, college coaches/recruiters, and college admissions offices.

Foster team unity and collaboration.

Assist student athletes in conflict resolution, in developing positive interpersonal relationships with staff and students, and in maintaining a healthy body, mind, and soul.

Support the social and emotional development of all athletes both on and off the field/court.

CLERICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with the Athletic Director to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements.

Maintain files, copies of pertinent materials, eligibility forms, transfer forms, and grade reports.

Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within program.

Work in collaboration with the Athletic Director to establish and maintain a budget and facilitate fundraising when necessary.

Assist the Athletic Director in creating documents and player-specific highlight film to distribute to prospective college coaches.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Several years of successful high school varsity coaching experience at both the assistant and head coaching level is required.

Several years of successful coaching experience at the collegiate level is preferred.

Current CPR/First Aid Certification

CAP 1 or 2 Certification

Experience working with students in a diverse, multicultural academic setting.

General knowledge of effective and safe coaching techniques and procedures.

Knowledge of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) and the NCAA Eligibility rules/regulations.

Knowledge of intercollegiate athletic programs.

Knowledge of and skill in the use of computers and software applications.

Demonstrated ability to instruct and supervise student athletes.

Demonstrated ability to follow district policies and procedures.

Excellent organizational, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated ability to maintain emotional control under stress.

Demonstrated ability to connect all players to a college playing opportunity; ability to provide the percentage of previous players who secured a spot on a DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, or NJCAA team.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, parents, the community, and collegiate personnel.

Demonstrated ability to raise student achievement.

Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks to completion.

Ability to effectively identify and resolve problems while maintaining confidentiality.

Strong personal work ethic and high level of personal integrity.
