We increase the health and resilience of urban forests and wetlands, catalyze connections between people and nature, and strengthen the environmental workforce.
Started in 2012, the Natural Areas Conservancy is the first park conservancy dedicated exclusively to New York City’s natural areas–20,000 acres across all five boroughs. Since 2019, we have also worked on a national scale, leading a network of representatives from cities across the U.S. to strengthen research, information sharing, and communication efforts to enhance the field of urban forest management.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Since 2017 the Natural Areas Conservancy has worked with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (NYC Parks) on a citywide trails program to formalize, improve, and steward 300 miles of nature trails throughout New York City. The NAC also provides technical expertise to recruit, train, and supervise Trail Maintainers, advanced volunteers that are part of the NYC Parks Super Stewards program. We provide training to these advanced volunteers on trail design and maintenance to empower them to adopt and maintain trails in their communities. The role of
Community Engagement Coordinator will report to the
Trails Program Manager and
will train and supervise advanced volunteers to help us achieve our goal of long-term maintenance and activation, with a focus on 45 miles of newly formalized trails on Staten Island.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide scopes of work and training to volunteers for trail improvement projects such as invasive plant removal, corridor pruning, water bar/check step installations, puncheon installation, locally sourced lumber/rock structures, and forest restoration

Collaborate with NAC Trails Technical Lead and natural resource management, stewardship, and maintenance staff from NYC Parks to scope trail maintenance requirements for all trails volunteer projects

Document all new and ongoing volunteer projects, and report on the efforts of local trail stewards

Grow and manage a portfolio of trail maintenance efforts by leveraging existing resources and partnerships to advance on-the-ground improvements by volunteers

Collaborate with Trails Program Manager to develop training curriculum for volunteer groups and individuals

Collaborate with Public Health Outreach Coordinator to engage regional partners, local community groups, and individuals to become trail stewards in target public health neighborhoods

Support the implementation of tiered leadership and skill building opportunities for volunteers

In partnership with the Trails Program Manager, Implement strategies to build a culture of engagement and belonging among volunteers
REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

Experience developing and managing partnerships
-
Experience planning and executing public events
-
Experience with workplace safety practices

Experience engaging volunteers, members of the public, and public agencies

Strong verbal and written communication skills
-
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and liaise with a wide range of senior stakeholders

Willingness to work occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends

Valid New York State driver’s license
PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in environmental science or outdoor recreation

1+ years of experience in volunteer management and community engagement

Experience initiating or growing volunteer programs

Knowledgeable about trail design, construction, and maintenance
JOB LOCATION:
This job will be 50% field-based and 50% remote. The
Community Engagement Coordinator should be willing to work from a primary office location in Manhattan or Queens when needed, and field work reporting locations in all five boroughs of New York City. Access to a reliable network connection for meetings and presentations is required.
COMPENSATION/BENEFITS
The NAC is offering a salary of $54,000-$55,000 for this position in addition to a competitive benefits package including generous Paid Time Off, medical/dental/vision insurance, 401K, work from home stipend, and professional development.
