The City of Renton is recruiting for a Traffic Maintenance Worker to support the Traffic Sign and Marking Shop. Under the supervision of the Sign and Marking Supervisor, this position is responsible for traffic control, sign, marking and channelization activities in City's right-of-way. This position also fabricates signs via a digital plotter and performs new installs from traffic engineering request work orders. This position works both independently and in a team setting. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
(Duties listed refer to level 1)
  • Perform routine, entry-level duties to assist in the manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control, information signs and symbols, and channelization devices.
  • Clean, prepare, and perform street marking activities.
  • Assist with new installs as instructed from engineering work orders.
  • Paint centerlines, crosswalks, legends, parking stalls and curbing; cut signs and bake sign labels onto metal backing.
  • Dig holes and mix, pour and finish cement for proper installation of signposts and piping; use banding machine to secure sign to post; mix concrete and mortar c-curbs.
  • Install overhead signs on signal poles; operate lift and boom vehicles.
  • Assist with the placement and maintenance of signs, traffic buttons, cones, barricades, and other traffic control devices to control and divert traffic as needed.
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of thermal plastic and Raised Pavement Marker’s (RPM) in city right-away.
  • Deploy Variable Message Sign (VMS) trailers.
  • Perform traffic control duties as needed, including for contractors or other City departments as instructed.
  • Operate a street painting machine/truck to apply street and curb markings and traffic control symbols.
  • Assist with the layout of lines to be painted; mix and thin paint to proper color and consistency; monitor and control paint flow for proper width and amounts.
  • Clean, maintain, and adjust a variety of equipment.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of tools, equipment, and material supplies on assigned vehicle; notify supervisor of supply needs and purchase tools and materials according to established procedures.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, paint spraying machines, pavement grinder, welder, saw cutter, thermal plastic trailer, button truck, boom truck, bucket truck, VMS signs/trailers, forklift, jack hammer, and hand and power tools
  • Learn sign and painting layouts, color specifications and other State laws and regulations.
  • Respond to calls regarding damaged or missing signs.
  • Cut away trees and vegetation as needed to remove visual obstructions.
  • Remove graffiti from Transportation assets.
  • Install banners as instructed.
  • Maintain the shop and storage bays in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  • Maintain a variety of records related to work orders, work performed, and inventory levels.
  • Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
(requirements listed refer to Level 1)
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of this classification.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • The following certificates are required within six (6) months of employment:
    • Flagging certificate
    • First aid and CPR certificates
    • BNSF contractor card
  • Successful passing of a required driving record check.
  • Successful passing of a required background check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
  • Move throughout City facilities and buildings.
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Communicate with City employees and residents.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 20 pounds regularly, and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.
  • Climb and work from ladders, climb stairs.
  • Bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Noise level out in the field is moderately loud.
  • Exposure to high voltage wires, hazardous materials, heights, and noise from equipment.
  • Work is performed within the right of way, and in high traffic conditions.
  • May be required to participate in a standby or on-call rotation.
  • Work nights and/or weekend hours as needed.
