Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking a Tradesworker for the Facilities Management Division. This position is located at various locations throughout Volusia County and will be responsible for construction trades work including carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, painting, roofing, landscaping, irrigation and masonry related to park and building maintenance, repair, remodel or new construction that requires little supervision and a higher degree skill.

Illustrative Duties

  • May perform general and limited tasks in the construction, renovation, modification, installation, and repair of buildings, apparatus, and facilities with close supervision.
  • May perform general painting applications of interior and exterior areas of buildings, preparation and repair of surfaces to be painted.
  • May perform general air conditioning and heating repair, preventive maintenance duties required for a variety of equipment. Performs general plumbing repair and installation of valves, fittings, fixtures, waste lines, etc.
  • May perform general carpentry repair and renovation of framework, paneling, ceilings, doors, windows, etc.
  • May perform general electrical repair and renovation of lighting, switches, receptacles, various types of conduits, etc.
  • May install and repair underground drainage piping, structures, and restoration.
  • May perform concrete work (eg. sidewalks, driveways, free form, etc.).
  • May do grade shots for pipe and structure installation.
  • May perform small engine repair.
  • May perform work related to utility infrastructure at water/wastewater plants, water main installs and maintenance, lift station operation, troubleshooting and maintenance to include mechanical, electrical and structural components.
  • May perform preventive maintenance duties such as cleaning of buildings and facilities and replacing light ballast.
  • May assist or perform work related to utilities such as meter installation, water/sewer line locates and maintenance, lift station troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • May perform work such as venue set up for meetings, classroom training, theater, presentations, or banquets. Sets up audio/visual equipment and operates same, if necessary. Connects sound equipment and sets appropriate volume levels for both house systems and portable systems. Connects and operates lighting systems and sets dimmer systems to compliment client's event. Installs event specific equipment such as basketball court and goals, dance floor, staging, risers, ice rink, hockey goals and glass, lighting trusses, etc.
  • May operate all associated equipment to include but not limited to medium-size weight construction equipment and vehicle (e.g. tractor, front loader, mini excavator, skid loader, dump truck, pick-up truck, and trailer).
  • May load and unload trailer equipment and materials.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • May perform work found in the Maintenance Worker classification series.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as required

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or possession of GED and two (2) years of experience in public assembly building or maintenance and repair in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, air conditioning, painting, mechanical pipe installation and repair, concrete, or brickwork.

A comparable amount of education and training may be substituted for the minimum experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.

Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (level to be determined by division) may be required, depending on position assignment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Depending on the assignment:

  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools of one or more of the building trades.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to perform advanced complex work.
  • Ability to perform work in one or more of the trades without close supervision.
  • Skilled in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the trades to which assigned.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Ability to work from maps, blueprints, schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Ability to perform work from oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform shop math.
  • Ability to write simple sentences relaying information.
  • If assigned to Parks, Recreation, and Culture:
  • Ability to safely operate medium-size weight construction equipment and vehicles (e.g. tractor, front loader, mini excavator, skid loader, dump truck, pick-up truck, and trailer).
  • Ability to safely load and unload trailer equipment and materials.

Physical Demands:
Medium work to heavy work. Ability to see (depth perception, color, acuity), hear, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach overhead, climb, grasp, lift, carry, pull, push up to 50 pounds. Visual acuity (peripheral vision, depth perception) to operate motorized vehicles.


Mental Demands:
Ability to read and comprehend work orders, safety instructions, maps, blueprints, mechanical drawings, instructions, procedures, memos. Ability to perform shop math. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data and details to others.


Environmental Demands
: Inside and outside work. May require exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), hazardous conditions, chemicals, dust, confined spaces and poor ventilation.
