Day in the Life of a Telecommunications Center Representative:
The Telecommunication Center Representative is responsible for operating the PBX switchboard to facilitate communications between the public and hospital personnel and relay intra-system calls and information.
Here’s what you will need:

  • High School diploma 9or equivalent certificate from an accredited program) or higher degree
  • One (1) or more years of office experience

Here is what you will be doing:

  • Answers all incoming calls and direct calls to proper extension or page as necessary.
  • Monitors all emergency alarms and follow correct paging procedures for such events.
  • Announces emergency notifications as necessary.
  • Uses Lynx & SNPP systems to notify appropriate parties of codes, emergencies etc.
  • Takes, logs and relays information for on-call personnel for Engineering, Hospice, Medical Records, Bio Med, Home away from Home and Telecommunications.
  • Instructs internal callers on how to fill out online telecommunications work order request.
  • Notifies team members at the end of each shift with any updated material, number changes and situations that need to be brought to their attention.
  • Maintains up-to-date information in work notebook to give best possible customer service.
  • Monitors TV and weather radio informing personnel by page etc. if appropriate, remains informed of organizational events and changes that may generate calls and inquiries.
  • Accesses on-call schedules for Physicians and Pastoral Care; dispatch calls appropriately.
  • Maintains contact with Security, Environmental Services and Engineering via radio, pocket pager or cell phone, responds to trouble calls and informs Telecomm. Techs appropriately.
  • Monitors alarms systems such as gas panels, generators, and duress alarms.

  • Ability to remain calm with difficult callers and in emergency situations
  • Ability to communicate clearly, have good diction, pleasant speaking voice, and be able to be understood over the telephone
  • Proficient with basic computer skills
  • Ability to provide personable customer service
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to maintain flexible schedule and rotating on-call hours

Nice to have:

  • Experience as a telephone operator in a busy multi-position environment
