The Sustainability Specialist, under the direction of the Sustainability Program Manager, performs professional and administrative work in a variety of areas of sustainable and green programs. This includes, but is not limited to; researching funding and grant opportunities, drafting grant proposals, staff and resident training, coordinating with various agencies, and networking to form collaborative partnerships for green spaces and other sustainability initiatives of both small and large scale for Opportunity Home in its efforts to promote sustainable housing and improve the quality of life of its residents.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Research and development of funding opportunities for sustainable building and modernization.Work to initiate internal and external green programs.Examine building plans for input regarding green building measures.Maintain Opportunity Home’s Energy Star Portfolio for the Better Buildings Challenge, the SA2030 District, and the future San Antonio Benchmarking PoliciesAssist the Sustainability Manager with any Energy Performance Contracts, Measurement and Verification audits and reports, and five year HUD Energy Audits Research and write grants for potential sustainable projects, to include solar, pollinator gardens, urban farming, etc. Assist in maintaining, and bring new ideas into the Garcia Street Urban Farm.Build community gardens and find funding to maintain gardens Building inspections and testing for Indoor Air Quality, Home Energy Rating System (HERS) ratings, and Green Certification complianceGeneral administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.Behavioral Competencies: This position requires the incumbent to exhibit the following behavioral skills: Leadership: Provides direction to people and/or projects by clearly and effectively setting course of action for the department, staff, and tasks; manages the planning, execution, and achievement of department goals by providing regular communication to staff and stakeholdersCommitment: Sets high standards of performance; pursues aggressive goals and works hard/smart to achieve them; strives for results and success; conveys a sense of urgency and brings issues to closure; and persists despite obstacles and oppositionCustomer Service: Meets/exceeds the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers; identifies, understands monitors and measures the needs of both internal and external customers; talks and acts with customers in mind; and recognizes working colleagues as customersEffective Communication: Ensures important information is passed to those who need to know; conveys necessary information clearly and effectively orally or in writing; demonstrates attention to, and convey understanding of, the comments and questions of others; and listens effectively. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Minimum of a Bachelor’s in Sustainability, Architecture, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Sustainable Development, Environmental Studies, Public Policy and Administration, or equivalent Preferred Education: Certified HERS Rater, Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Knowledge using AutoCAD, Enviro-Tech, Sketch-up, or RemRate, Data entry experience preferredLicense and Certifications: Texas Class “C” driver’s license at the time of placement and be insurable by the Housing Authority’s liability and fleet insurance carrier.Must have the ability to earn certifications as required by assigned tasks.Technical Skills: Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
