General Description of Duties

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The purpose of this position is to promote stewardship of the community's natural, societal, and economic resources through outreach activities for the County employees and community. The educational and outreach activities performed in this position include principles of sustainability, energy and water conservation, waste reduction, and recycling.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Provides education and guidance to residential, commercial, institutional, and public sectors, visitors of Leon County buildings, and Leon County employees, through the promotion of sustainability, resource conservation, and waste reduction. Assesses needs and provides targeted educational outreach for waste reduction and sustainability initiatives through workshops and presentations. Presents educational sessions to civic groups, businesses, and schools. Maintains and disseminates educational content encouraging sustainable choices on a day-to-day basis.

Creates printed and electronic materials for Resource Stewardship to include sustainability and waste reduction, such as household hazardous waste, recycling/reuse, and organic composting. Writes content for publications. Updates program websites and social media pages.

Coordinates various programs managed by the Office of Sustainability. Assists in the planning and implementation efforts for sustainability events, logistics, development of materials, and event promotion. Works in close coordination with the Recycling and Sustainability Manager on policy and program development. Manages tables at outreach events related to sustainability and community education. Administers the community garden program.

Provides support for routine administrative program tasks. Participates in planning processes, such as strategic planning for Resource Stewardship. Supports other public programs.

DIFFICULTY
This position requires the use of independent judgment. Since multiple projects will be performed at various stages of the implementation process, the employee in this position must be mindful of time constraints. Deadlines should be met to the best of the division's ability, considering that availability and unforeseen emergencies may take priority over others. This position also requires the ability to prioritize initiatives and proposals through consideration of time, resources, budget, capability, program goals, etc. Lastly, difficult or creative thinking is required in order to identify the best and most meaningful way to reach specific audiences.

The duties of this position are somewhat defined and periodically checked. This position has access to supervisor and/or lead co-worker when needed.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACTS
Contacts are made with a variety of County employees for the purpose of coordinating public education and outreach activities. Contact is also made with various external organizations, associations, and groups to coordinate activities and share or present information.

EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USED
Equipment and tools used include a personal computer, word processing software, and spreadsheet software.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is mainly performed indoors at a desk. Physical demands include standing, walking, and sitting. This position also requires the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of administrative principles and practices, including goal setting and time management. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and to work with shifting priorities and schedules. Ability to speak in public and confidently communicate verbally to a wide variety of audiences. Ability to use independent judgment in the absence of the supervisor. Ability to follow through on assignments with attention to detail. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to work both as a team leader and member, and independently. Ability to produce clear written documentation for technical and non-technical audiences.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Requires graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Environmental Studies, Communications, Education, Marketing, or Urban & Regional Planning.

Necessary Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License and a favorable driving record.

All Leon County employees (regular full-time and part-time, OPS, and PRN) are required to work before, during and after a Declared Local State of Emergency (DLSOE). Participation is considered a condition of employment.

Selection Guidelines:

FLSA STATUS : Non-exempt. This job is responsible for first level customer service contact work, promoting stewardship of the community's natural, societal and economic resources.
