POSITION PROPERTIES
Position Title

Summer School Teacher - English Learners Newcomers Math - High School, Summer 2023

PURPOSE

This teacher is responsible for classroom instruction in math education for students in the high school English Learners Newcomer program for summer school 2023 only. The focus will be teaching EL newcomers basic math skills and vocabulary and helping to prepare them for high school math classes.

(Teachers are paid for the days they work plus the one extra day for building meeting, open house, etc.. Juneteenth and 4th of July are not paid holidays for summer school. Hourly staff are only paid for the days they work.)

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Serves as teacher, co-teacher, and/or intervention teacher for EL students in math.
  • Secures language interpreters for parent meetings and school events, as needed.
  • Works with summer school EL teachers to properly place students and adjust schedules, as needed.
  • Pushes into content classes to help EL students, if scheduling allows.
  • Implements the practice of differentiating instruction, assignments, and assessments to accurately assess and assign grades to the work of EL students in math classes.
  • Attends professional development sessions for summer school EL teachers prior to the start of summer school.
  • Works collaboratively with the EL department to support students and families in the program.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated both individually and collaboratively.
  • Plans and implements a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of all students using data-driven decision-making.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of all students.
  • Prepares for assigned classes and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes and communicates clear objectives to students for all lessons and units.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of individuals or student groups involved.
  • Collaborates with administrators, colleagues and parents in a positive and productive manner.
  • Strives to implement by instruction and action, the District's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Evaluates the learning problems of students on a regular basis, seeking assistance of District specialists as needed and/or required.
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct and develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure while maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and appropriate manner.
  • Makes provisions for being available to students, staff, and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s) where applicable.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as needed.
  • Understands and adheres to Board policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Appropriate academic preparation to be certified by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Certification: Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate. Middle School or High School Math Certificate and/or ESOL endorsement preferred.

Experience: Prior experience teaching math at either at the elementary or secondary level and/or work with EL students preferred. Bilingual preferred. Familiarity with standardized tests, ability to analyze data, and experience with special education would be considered assets. Excellent computer skills required. Knowledgeable in SIOP and/or other best practices for EL learning.

  • Identify needs and abilities of individual students and to adapt instructional methods accordingly
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents

  • Perform basic computer functions such as word processing and internet use
  • Use district software for recording grades and finding student information
  • Utilize smart boards, projectors and other instructional technology provided by the district

Conditions and Environment
The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading and unloading students from district transportation and supervising recess.
