Overview:
This position serves as an assistant for research activities within one of CMH's laboratories, clinics, or departments. Under the supervision of an investigator, the Summer Scholar will assist in compiling, storing, and analyzing data and/or samples for a research study. The position will last for ten to twelve weeks.

Accepted Project Descriptions

  • Surgery and Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Section
    • In this study, we aim to review our clinical experience with children and adolescents with vulvodynia, a chronic pain condition, at Children’s Mercy Hospital during the past 10 years. At the completion of the Summer Scholar Program, we will submit an abstract with our results for presentation to the North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Annual Clinical and Research Meeting.
  • Department of Surgery, Division of Gynecology
    • This project is through the Division of Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology and in conjunction with the Department of Pediatric Surgery. We seek to answer basic questions regarding the gynecologic history, gynecologic health care delivered, and reproductive health choices of adolescent natal females who are undergoing bariatric surgery.
  • Transitional Energy Balance Research Lab
    • This Summer Scholar position is with the Translational Energy Balance Research Lab. The Scholar will work on multiple studies involving the measurement of energy balance through assessment of resting metabolism, body composition, physical activity, and metabolic function.
  • Adolescent Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology, Toxicology and Theraputics
    • The goal of this project is to evaluate neuroimaging as a biomarker of drug response in teens with eating disorders. Secondary objectives include linking drug response in the brain with naltrexone exposure in the body and understanding the impact of individual-level factors on exposure and response.
  • Heart Center
    • Physical activity is a vital component of adolescent health. However, some adolescents with unique conditions, such as pediatric heart disease, avoid physical activity due to fear that it might damage their heart or increase their risk for an adverse cardiac event.
  • Genomics Medicine Center
    • The Younger Laboratory is in the Genomic Medicine Center at Children’s Mercy and is highly integrated with the research institute’s rare disease program, “Genomic Answers for Kids.” One area of our lab is focused on the development of patient-derived cellular models, an approach in which we “reprogram” blood cells from a patient into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) that can be used to model disease states.
Qualifications:
  • HS diploma or equivalent and Serving as a research assistant in other environments; taking courses at least at the undergraduate level related to research methodology with a 3.0 minimum GPA; conducting a research study as part of a course requirement. or
  • Associate's Degree 2 years of college in a field related to medicine or allied profession preferred and Serving as a research assistant in other environments; taking courses at least at the undergraduate level related to research methodology with a 3.0 minimum GPA; conducting a research study as part of a course requirement.
Starting Pay:
Our pay ranges are market competitive. The pay range for this job begins at $11.15/hr, but your offer will be determined based on your education and experience.

Remote Work/Work from Home:
This position is not eligible work remotely, which means that the person hired will be required to work onsite at one of our Children’s Mercy locations and may not work from home.
