Summer Camp Dance Specialist

Statement of General Purpose:

The Dance Specialist is responsible for planning, organizing, and teaching one or more artistic and cultural types of age-appropriate dance and physical recreation lessons and activities to multi-aged club members at one of our three community centers located in North, South, and West Philadelphia.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and facilitate high-quality and engaging dance and physical education activities and routines for multi-aged club members utilizing existing Boys & Girls Club of America resources as well as creating individually drafted lesson plans.
  • Create 4-6 week project that concludes with a culminating event with campers incorporating knowledge and skills obtained through dance activities and lessons.
  • Schedules, supervises, leads, and participates in dance activities, providing guidance, direction, instruction, and motivation to all participants.
  • Oversees conduct and behavior, preventing altercations and injuries through non-confrontational, non-physical. Non-threatening techniques; corrects disciplinary problems in an understanding, positive, and non-physical manner.
  • Trains, rehearses, and prepares dance routines for exhibits, shows, festivals, etc.; organizes and conducts competitions, related activities, and tournament play among area human service agencies and community centers.
  • Ensure all necessary materials and supplies are available and prepared in advance.
  • Track and monitor program supplies, ensuring they are used properly and efficiently; monitor the usage and storage of materials that may pose safety risks.
  • In partnership with Summer Camp Coordinator and Counselors, manage classroom behaviors and overall positive learning environment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe program space.
  • Serve as a positive role model for youth by building strong relationships with participants and demonstrating and promoting positive and professional communication, behavior, and engagement.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all program participants at all times.
  • Support daily program operations, as needed, which may include accompanying children on trips, distributing snacks, or other related tasks.
  • Other related duties, as assigned.

Skills/ Knowledge Required:

  • Strong Knowledge and understanding of different methods, techniques and skills required for instructing one or more artistic and cultural types of dance lessons and activities for multi-aged club members.
  • Experience working with children, preferably in a summer camp setting.
  • Ability to manage a group of up to 20 children.
  • Ability to provide leadership and direction to program participants.
  • Ability to apply creativity, imagination, spontaneity, humor, perseverance, and a variety of motivational techniques to make activities engaging and successful.
  • Ability to effectively communicate positively, professionally and productively to all participants, clients, families, volunteers and co-workers.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Two (2) years of formal post-high school training or education; high school diploma required.

- Two (2) years of experience leading or teaching classes or groups in the recreational, cultural dance areas assigned.

- Any equivalent combination of acceptable training, education and experience.

- Ability to submit all required background checks, health screenings, and other regulatory documentation.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $19.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday

Experience:

  • Childcare: 2 years (Preferred)
  • Dance: 2 years (Preferred)

License/Certification:

  • Driver's License (Preferred)
