PURPOSE OF POSITION:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The PT Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for providing direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp. Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Follows and facilities purposeful and engaging activities and curriculum which meet the individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of the participants.
  • Facilitates a program environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children.
  • Have passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the children and staff of the program.
  • Have a strong desire to be a positive influence on children.
  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate to diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to possess conflict resolutions skills, demonstrate sound judgement, and take initiative.
  • Ability to supervise a group of children; providing careful; attentive supervision; alert at all times.
  • Attend all mandatory training
  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with children, parents, and staff. Models relationships-building skills in all interactions.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all environmental aspects of camp
  • All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Minimum age of 18
  • High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  • Previous experience working with school age children; preferably in a day camp setting
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc…
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certification and Child Abuse Prevention Training within 30 days of hire date.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Complete all components of licensing requirements for Mississippi State Department of Health or Tennessee Department of Human Services.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Flexible work schedule is required. Part-time work schedules may vary per the needs of specific summer camp sites.
All locations (with exception of Collierville) are open from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm.
The Collierville location is open from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Climbing, sitting, standing, pushing, walking, kneeling, and stooping
  • Exposure to electrical/mechanical mechanisms
  • Exposure to some chemical elements
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
