POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Controller, the Staff Accountant provides accounting support to the Controller and Owners. This position has oversight responsibilities for an Accounting Assistant, the day-to-day accounting operations, audit preparations and participation, and financial report creation and explanation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform mid-level general ledger account reconciliations, verify accuracy of data, and report, identify and correct errors.
  • Monitor policies and procedures, identify and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Support timely monthly, quarterly, half-year and year-end financial close, including assigned journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, and overall maintenance of all accounts.
  • Maintain and update records and reports for profit and loss, taxes, liabilities and assets.
  • Prepare special financial reports as requested and be prepared to fully explain the outcomes.
  • Delegate appropriate tasks to other accounting staff to ensure the department is meeting deadlines.
  • Prepare the department for audits, participate in the execution of the audit, and report the findings to the Controller, and Owners.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the department ensuring accuracy of all work.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Strong operating knowledge of recognized accounting procedures
  • Ability to prepare, analyze and explain financial statements
  • Strong communication skills to effectively make recommendations to the Controller, Owners, and Board Members
  • Ability to work cohesively with management, staff, and customers
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrating good judgement, effective use of time and confidentiality
  • Must be dependable and punctual in attendance
  • Must display a service-oriented attitude

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting with at least 3 years of higher-level accounting experience is required.
  • Multi-departmental/cost center accounting experience strongly recommended.
  • Financial audit experience is a plus!

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's facilities.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust and focus.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment.
  • Must hear and speak well enough to conduct business over the telephone or face to face for long periods of time in English.
