The Project Engineer – Operating Tech in the Engineering department will apply knowledge and experience of railroad operations, IT and system engineering practices, operating rules, signal operations, dispatch operations and other experience in the operating environment to develop and implement solutions to maintain and deploy current and new technologies in support of the operating department.

Accountabilities

  • Leads and monitors all installed systems supported by the Operating Technologies group including PTC in line with standard work.
  • Assists in coordination with various teams testing and evaluating new systems for future use.
  • Evaluates existing systems and provides technical direction to the support teams.
  • Position will communicate problems found, impact to operations and mitigation plan to field and office management to insure cooperation and coordination to minimize impact to train operations.
  • The position provides primary engineering support to the operating teams (field employees, test engineers) with regards to PTC and other projects supported by the Operating Tech team.
  • Position will develop a complete understanding of the technical aspects of the PTC system and software requirements, becoming a PTC Subject Matter Expert.
  • Position supports PTC deployment and operations, assisting in the triage of problem reports and identifies defects/issues and suggests solutions that increase the efficiency of PTC operations
  • The position will review technical software requirements and configurations, writes and revises test scenarios, and performs testing of the locomotive, dispatch, track and back office portions of PTC and related Projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required
  • A Bachelor's degree or commensurate experience in this field
  • Able to effectively work independently and in group settings
Preferred
  • able to maintain and deploy current and new technologies for a large department
  • familiar with Positive Train Control (PTC)

Physical Requirements

  • Able to climb on and off locomotives while carrying up to 35 pounds of test gear
  • Able to work in confined spaces within a locomotive to access systems under test
  • While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee will spend extended hours in front of a computer screen
