Sr. Engineer Exterior Trim / Lighting

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, Exteriors and Lighting, you will be responsible to direct full-service suppliers to design, prototype, validate, release and launch components for current and future vehicle programs.

Exteriors covers a diverse family of components including front & rear fascia assemblies, wheel liners and sound absorbers, underbody shields, spoilers, appliques and covers, rocker panels and other trim components. Lit components include any exterior trim pieces that have lighting requirements, whether decorative or regulatory.

Requirements/Tasks:

  • Support supplier selection with purchasing by creating Statement of Requirements / Requests For Information documents and performing technical reviews.
  • Participate in the iterative process with the design/styling studio to deliver the optimal balance of form vs. function vs. cost
  • Concept engineering & feasibility
  • Packaging & layout within vehicle architecture
  • Approve meeting design targets for craftsmanship, function, cost and weight
  • Manage supplier design, including surface development, structures, datum strategy, attachments, GD&T
  • Familiarity with FMVSS regulations, Lighting 108 and / or CFR 581 bumper requirements and ECE equivalents
  • Manage supplier to design and release components and final assemblies into the Mullen PLM system for prototype and production BOM releases
  • Utilize DFSS methodologies as appropriate during the design, validation and launch of the program;
  • Interpret CAE simulation results (mold flow, photometrics, crash, aero) and integrate recommendations into product design;
  • Approve tooling designs and create Mullen plant assembly instructions;
  • Support overall vehicle development milestones and prototype/production build events;
  • Manage the team through the Program Development Team (PDT) process, with open isssues and drive timely cost impact quotes from suppliers as needed.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional OEM teams, Manufacturing Engineering and Procurement groups to ensure system manufacturing and assembly feasibility and serviceability.
  • Responsible for technical documentation to include DFMEAs, DVP&R’s.Deep-dive CAD structure to identify and fix and positioning errors & variant errors

Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in vehicle exterior trim / lighting design & development This includes design related experience with at least some of the following areas:
  • Fascias
  • Side valences
  • Sill trims
  • Underbody aero shields
  • Wheelhouse liners Spoilers / Appliques
  • Rocker panels
  • Proven experience creating complex CAD schemes and models to an excellent standard, preferably using CATIA V5 or V6
  • Proven experience with thermoplastic & thermoset resin materials and class A manufacturing technologies (including painting)
  • Proven experience reading CAE reports: mold flow, photometrics, crash
  • Launch experience preferred
  • Five or more years of experience with plastics design, Class A surfaces, front crash, aero features, lighting integration, module integration, tooling, resins, supply base, fit and finish, gap and flush, module concept, thermal expansion, structural design, paint (matching).

Education

  • Bachelor of Science (minimum) in Mechanical Engineering or relevant engineering discipline.
  • Advanced Degree is advantageous
