Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Property MHDD Technician must be able to demonstrate the knowledge of skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the residents served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principals of growth and development and possess the ability to assess and interpret data to identify age specific needs. Participates in Natural Work Teams and/or Quality Action Teams. The purpose is to provide quality patient care by fostering therapeutic relationships, assisting in active treatment and supporting the hospital in the pursuit of the LSH Strategic Plan.

Employees in this position must be able to lift, transport, move or physically assist people receiving services either individually or with assistance. Employees must be able to lift 40 pounds repeatedly to accomplish these tasks and may occasionally be required to lift more than 40 pounds. In some instances, mechanical equipment may be provided to assist in lifting and moving people receiving services. Employees must have the physical strength necessary frequently push, pull, twist, bend squat, walk or stand for extended periods of time. Transporting people receiving services is also required, so walking, standing and sitting are essential to the job. Employees in this classification must also respond to aggressive resident behavior using specific techniques, which may at times include the use of physical restraint. Employees must be able to observe, hear, communicate and respond to people in distress. Employees in this classification may occasionally be required to work overtime, with shifts lasting up to a maximum of 16 hours per day. An employee in this classification escorts residents on the SPTP program to and from classes. Employee must be able to with stand frequent climbing of stair and stating longer than 10 minutes in one position.

This position performs duties as assigned by the Program Leader to provide a safe and secure environment for residents, staff, visitors, and the surrounding community. The primary role of this position is to maintain and distribute property of residents when appropriate, ensuring accurate counts and inventories of said property throughout the SPTP. This position assists with searches of rooms and individuals for prohibited items. This position also performs other duties which include documentation of property distributed, or incoming property. Assist while Safety and Security staff examine packages for prohibited items, distribute mail and packages to residents.


Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Property Duties:

  • Checks incoming packages for prohibited items and searching by hand.
  • Maintains the location and accurate inventory of resident’s property.
  • Distributes appropriate property as needed in a timely manner.
  • Distributes patient/resident mail and packages in a timely manner and pursuant to U.S. postal regulations and program policies.
  • Manages the property rooms in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Gathers statements when necessary to support documentation.
  • Assists with room searches as needed or required and maintains inventory of seized prohibited items, and item overages, removing said items from the control of residents or patients.
  • Ensures that resident clothing is repaired, replaced, or properly disposed. Secures residents money for deposit into reimbursement. Stores and maintains in an orderly fashion resident excess property.
  • Analyze property for security and policy adherence, making judgments about what items residents are requesting could present a security concern to the facility, determining whether or not there is contraband being sent into the facility and assisting with evidence collection and collaborating with the Special Investigator, as well as conducting thorough property searches and identifying contraband, elicit materials, and unauthorized items.
  • Follows the Due Process policies and adhere to policy requirements, issuing Shakedown reports, Rights Restrictions, and Notifications as appropriate.
  • Maintain detailed records on property items, mail issuance, shakedown reports, and rights restrictions.
  • Account for property items that are involved in litigation as well as property for residents who have returned to KODC custody.
  • Inspect electronics and tamper stickers to ensure the safety and security of this facility.
  • Work with residents on what products are allowed to be purchased and what approved vendors the residents are allowed to utilize.
  • Participate in Property Claim investigations.
  • Assist in the update of SPTP policies related to mail, property handling, and contraband and the SPTP Property Handbook.
  • Engage in process for ordering and purchasing supplies such as resident clothing and ward stock items.
  • Issue clothing to residents that need items.
  • Tag all new clothing that is sent in or ordered by the residents.
  • Take residents’ money orders to reimbursement to ensure that these are properly deposited into the resident’s account.
  • Deliver outgoing mail to the appropriate locations; including policy adherence regarding mail, property, and contraband issues.
  • Provides appropriate feedback related to resident care to members of Treatment Team. Maintains daily email access to receive communication from Treatment Team members and other and provide expected follow up.

Provides direct patient/resident care and fosters therapeutic relationships.

  • Learns patient/resident goals/objectives and documentation process.
  • Observes patient/resident behaviors to detect, report, and document significant behaviors and signs of stress
  • Gathers and documents data specific to behavioral modification and treatment plan goals.
  • Provides clear and direct feedback to patients/residents about issues and directs them to appropriate staff for consultation/resolution.
  • Completes all required documentation, (i.e. Incident reports, shift notes, daily charting, VS, etc.) in accordance with hospital and program policies, in a timely manner.
  • Interacts frequently with patients/residents, by encouraging participation in unit programming.
  • Encourages patients/residents to develop an understanding of their treatment goals and apply identified treatment strategies.
  • Promotes patient/resident independence, productivity and choice making.
  • Intervenes to prevent injury to patients/residents or others per LSH de-escalation techniques, using MANDT approved procedures.
  • Accounts for patients/resident’s presence per location monitor policy.
  • Takes vital signs as assigned, documents and reports abnormal findings to higher skilled nursing staff..
  • Trains, monitors and assists patients/residents with personal care and grooming, and activities of daily living.
  • Identifies teaching opportunities, providing timely instruction in conflict resolution, problem solving, stress management and social skills.
  • Collects laboratory samples for tests as directed by medical staff.
  • Performs blood glucose monitoring when trained and proficient.

Maintains safe, secure and therapeutic environment

  • Maintains safety for patients/residents on living units, at meals, in classrooms, at work sites, during activities, at program.
  • Work closely with security staff on the scanning of items and evidence collection using clear chain of custody, photographic evidence, and evidence handling procedures.
  • Documents as necessary to communicate criminal cases, and seizure information to supervisors and special investigators.
  • Pack up and move residents whenever there is a resident move occurring which also includes a thorough search of the resident’s property.
  • Ensures that unit rules are maintained in a fair and consistent manner.

Teamwork / Process Improvement

  • Provides appropriate feedback concerning patient/resident care issues to members of treatment team.
  • Maintains daily e-mail access to receive communication from nursing department and others, providing expected follow-up.
  • Complies with LSH and Program policies, procedures and nursing standards.
  • Attends and provides input to unit treatment team meetings and staff meetings as assigned.
  • Participates in staff development and meets individual learning needs, to include required computer based training.
  • Mentors other staff by providing individual supports and training.
  • Participates and cooperates in Natural Work Teams and/or Quality Action Team as assigned.
  • Demonstrates willingness to learn new concepts and a positive attitude by working cooperatively in a team process.
  • Demonstrates caring and respectful communication to all internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrates acceptable work habits that include coming to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Adheres to the behavioral and ethical standards of patient/resident care.
  • Performs all other job-related duties willingly as assigned by supervisor to accomplish the Strategic Plan of LSH


Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:

    Valid Driver’s License

    CPR Certification within 60-days of employment and maintain certification throughout employment

    CPI Certification within one month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment

    Requires an approved drug test approved by the Kansas Department of Administration unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties.

    Ability to pass a KBI background check

  • Preferred Qualifications:

    High school diploma or equivalent.

    MHDD Experience

  • Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Ability to pass a KBI background and pre-employment drug test.
