Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth. The special education teacher will provide quality educational programming and services through sound instruction to meet the needs of students; will develop and ensure the provisions of the Individual Education Program (IEP) are being implemented for special education students; and will comply with the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements. The Special Education Teacher reports directly to the Building Principal and/or Assistant Principal.

Upon hire, new employees to the Commonwealth of Virginia will be offered a sign-on bonus in the amount of $5,000 paid in one installment.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree; Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teacher License with one or more endorsements in special education; Experience teaching students with disabilities, preparing IEPs, collecting data, and reporting progress.

Preferred Qualifications:

Teaching in a secondary school setting; Teaching and/or working with at-risk youth.
