SLATE-Z Jobs Work Group Associate Job at South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone (SLATE-Z)

South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone (SLATE-Z) Los Angeles, CA 90015

$73.42 a day

Mission Statement

Revitalize South L.A. by moving residents to economic opportunity

Organization Overview

Founded in 2014, the South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone (SLATE-Z), also recognized as the South LA Promise Zone, is a cross-sector collective impact partnership of 55+ organizations working to revitalize South L.A. by moving residents to economic opportunity. As a place-based initiative, SLATE-Z is home to nearly 198,000 residents in parts of Vernon Central, South Park, Florence, Exposition Park, Vermont Square, Leimert Park, and Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw. The name “Transit Empowerment Zone” was chosen out of a desire to capitalize on opportunities that ongoing public transit expansion brings for neighborhood revitalization. In June 2016, SLATE-Z received a federal designation from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development in recognition of its comprehensive plan to tackle the area’s 46% poverty level.

The SLATE-Z partnership is governed by a Steering Committee that includes representatives of elected officials, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions. Five issue-based Work Groups – comprised of the 55+ Implementation Partners - design & implement collective impact projects to 1) move residents into living wage jobs; 2) increase economic activity; 3) improve educational opportunities; 4) reduce violent crime; and 5) increase access to public transit. The SLATE-Z partnership has a backbone organization, which is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Partners and based at Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC), SLATE-Z’s lead agency. The role of the backbone organization is to organize partners to fulfill SLATE-Z’s goals – by facilitating the five Work Groups; coordinating various aspects of the initiative such as data sharing & analysis; and working with LATTC to administer Promise Zone Preference Points and other federal benefits in SLATE-Z.

The goal of this project is to build the capacity of the SLATE-Z partnership to develop and implement strategies that advance the goals in SLATE-Z’s 10-year plan through participation in the five issue-based Work Groups.
