Position Summary:

Do you enjoy working with people? Are you interested in supporting research? If so, the Geophysical Institute is recruiting for a Shipping/Receiving Manager in our operations office. This position serves as a critical part of the institute’s operations infrastructure, shipping equipment, and other items all over the world to support faculty, staff, and students. In addition, this position has a wide variety of duties including labor support, oversight and direction for GI Expeditor, logistics, and occasional support of off-campus locations. Duties:

1-40Shipping and Receiving: Geophysical Institute (GI) and International Arctic Research Center (IARC) facilities. Receive and disperse all incoming freight. Coordinate shipments leaving the GI. Contact vendors for merchandise pick up. Serve as the point of contact for shipments. Coordinate and plan for reoccurring shipment projects.Essential
2-40Receiving and Tracking: Use the data management system to receive and track incoming shipments. Provide evaluation and assessment of shipping, receiving, and expediting activities to include all facets of operations. Provide accountability and security for all items and their whereabouts until delivered to the receiving party. Work within Banner System for reconciliation of purchase orders and items received.Essential
3-10Delivery: Expedite local purchase orders to vendors for purchase of equipment and materials and deliver to the requestor. Pick up and deliver freight to freight terminals and the airport. Assist GI Property Officer with annual property inventory and surplus to auction. Coordinate with the Property Officer to tag incoming equipment. Provide labor and outreach support as needed.Essential
4-10Supervision: Supervise Shipping and Receiving staff including selection, training, motivation, delegating responsibility, work review, performance evaluation, and discipline. Oversee, direct, and mentor personnel focusing on service excellence, continuous improvement and compliance with policies, processes, and regulations. This position sets departmental goals, looks for training opportunities and focuses on individual team-member strengths to provide excellent customer service to the units. Provides quality control over the work output by reviewing staff work, clarifying, and enforcing standard operating procedures and quality standards. Prioritize equipment and property storage related tasks. Supervise handling of storage of hazardous materials. Observe union policies and procedures for MSW-4 position.Essential

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex policies, rules, and regulations.

Required Education or Training:
Associate’s degree and two years of progressively responsible experience related to the program specialty, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional required qualifications:

  • Valid AK driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Three years of experience in the field of shipping and receiving and expediting required.
  • One year of supervisory experience is required.
  • Must have/be willing to complete Haz-Mat Recognition Training.
  • Must have/be willing to complete Forklift Operator training/certification and maintain certification.
  • Must have/be willing to complete Overhead Crane training.


Salary Information:

This position is full, Grade 78, continuing, non-exempt, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, based on education and experience.



Special Instructions to Applicants:

This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. The successful finalist will be expected to report to duty at the UAF office on the first day of employment.
