Job Description:
The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (BRAFB) is opening a search for a Senior Technology Manager to execute the implementation and continuous improvement of the Food Bank’s technology systems, and work collaboratively with all food bank staff and leaders to align technology systems with Food Bank’s strategic plans in support our mission to provide nourishing food to our neighbors in need.
Background:
The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is a respected, regional nonprofit providing nourishing food and hope to neighbors. Founded in 1981, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves 25 counties and eight cities in central and western Virginia, from Loudoun and Winchester in the north to the Lexington and Lynchburg areas in the south. We provide food to nearly 119,000 visitors each month through a partner network of more than 200 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters, as well as through nutrition programs for children, seniors, and rural neighbors. Total revenues of approximately $60 million and an operating budget of $15 million support the work of more than 65 employees in four locations, including our headquarters and main distribution center in Verona.
Position:
The Senior Technology Manager (STM) is responsible for overseeing enterprise computing including upgrades, requirements analysis and design, documentation, development of analysis and reporting capabilities for customers, identification, and implementation of information technology solutions in support of strategy and program development. The Senior Technology Manager will work with professional services providers to ensure completion of strategic technology roadmaps, data warehousing and data integration, and supervise the Data and Technology Specialist.
The key responsibilities of the Senior Technology Manager:
Data Systems and Management:
  • Oversee Data and Technology Specialist in managing information technology, user support, data collection, data integration across systems, and internal reporting.
  • Work with internal staff and external IT managed service providers to manage the delivery of IT services and vendor relationships.
  • In collaboration with the food bank leadership and outside consultants, develop a 2–3-year technology road map and carry out its implementation.
  • Design, implement and maintain data visualizations for use on organization website and internally.
  • Manage and improve systems and data integration, data warehousing and reporting systems. Ensure that integrations between third party systems, internal systems and the data warehouse are developed and maintained as needed.
  • Manage and perform the administration of report and data visualization tools (e.g., Jet, Tableau) including server upgrades, custom report creation, contract & license management).
  • Maintain and extend the data analytics and data warehouse environments to include new data sources as required.
  • Work with Data and Technology Specialist and departmental super-users to develop and implement quality control procedures, write training materials, and train staff in data entry processes and reporting.
  • Work with Data and Technology Specialist to manage technology inventory and oversee software and hardware replacement schedule.
  • Oversee and evaluate system security and back up policies and procedures.
Project Coordination and Communication:
  • Actively track and report on a weekly/monthly/annually basis each aspect of project performance against schedules, ensuring that project milestones or deadlines are being met and obstacles and issues are identified and brought to the designated team member(s) to ensure that project goals are achieved.
  • Identify and escalate issues and risks early to minimize impact to the overall project or reporting schedules.
Program Support and Evaluation:
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of digital systems supporting health care partnerships with BRAFB, including food insecurity screening, patient referral and tracking.
  • Work with program leaders on the assessment, identification, selection, and implementation of digital systems (e.g., Unite Virginia) to support referrals for food assistance and other services within BRAFB’s service area, and contribute to such efforts undertaken by the Federation of Virginia Food Banks as requested by BRAFB’s CEO.
  • Coordinate communications across teams and functions on IT-related projects to ensure expectations are kept in line with project goals and status.
Leadership, Management and Culture:
  • Work with direct reports to establish annual, individual performance goals and complete annual performance evaluations in accordance with BRAFB policies and practices.
  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer in the annual planning and budgeting process.
  • Provide direction and coaching to direct reports in performance management and professional development of departmental staff.
  • Establish and maintain robust levels of communication and service satisfaction within department and across the organization.
  • Encourage participation in annual employee engagement surveys and leads efforts to improve engagement where and when possible.
Required Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a field that focuses on IT, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or an equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Five years’ experience managing information technology systems and platforms, and data visualization tools.
  • Systems design and development process, including requirements analysis, feasibility studies, software design, programming, pilot testing, installation, evaluation and operational management.
  • Demonstrated experience building and expanding information systems services in a complex business environment required.
  • Minimum of three years management/supervisory experience.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to effectively collaborate across teams and functions on IT-related projects to ensure expectations are aligned with project objectives and status.
  • Excellent verbal, written, analytical and organizational skills.
  • General report writing experience, such as Jet, Crystal, Reporting Services, or other similar report writing.
  • Basic SQL / MS-SQL.
  • Tableau.
Desirable Technical Skills:
  • Ceres Software.
  • Microsoft SQL Server / Azure SQL.
  • Salesforce Administration.
  • Microsoft Azure and or Azure Data Factory.
  • Jet Reports.
  • Familiarity with HTTP/REST APIs (any).
Valid Virginia driver’s license required. Some travel to branch facilities is required, along with occasional evening/weekend work may be required.
