Pay Range


$36.50 - $47.28 Hourly for the 532.2 level

$43.78 - $56.70 Hourly for the 532.3 level

Job Description

We have an opening for an Electronics Fabrication Technician/Senior Electronics Fabrication Specialist. In this role, your primary function will be to operate and maintain the Mycronic Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly line. The line consists of the latest equipment in circuit board manufacturing including 3D printing of solder paste, automated component verification and placement, vapor phase soldering and vapor phase cleaning equipment. You will also fabricate and install electrical and electronic assemblies including panels, chassis, circuit boards and other specialized equipment used to support ongoing research and projects at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the engineering directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Provide general fabrication support on experimental apparatuses, components and circuit boards using standard machine tools, hand tools, soldering techniques, and test and measure equipment.
  • Utilize and interpret detailed verbal and/or written instructions, as well as diagrams, blueprints, schematics, and other technical documents to assemble products.
  • Test finished products for defects and update product documentation.
  • Operate and maintain Pick and Place and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) assembly line.
  • Assemble electrical panels, chassis and rack mount components under general supervision.
  • Fabricate miniature electronic assemblies and mechanical components with the assistance of an industry standard equipment to include use of a microscope.
  • Oversee parts stock organization, maintain accurate inventory and replenish/place requests for supplies as needed for Mycronic line.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 532.3 level

  • Analyze and interpret complex schematic and assembly drawings to fabricate specific electronic hardware.
  • Provide advanced support of the automated SMT assembly line including processes, programing, and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Provide advanced fabrication support following all technical specifications for fabrication of electronic component assemblies and specialized circuit boards.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in electronics, electronics fabrication, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Intermediate skills and understanding of electronic fabrication, installation, inspection, or micro-fabrication which may be application specific.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret production procedures, bills of material (BOM), wiring diagrams, schematics, and other technical documents.
  • Experience soldering including but not limited to soldering iron, reflow oven and hot air station.
  • Experience programming and operating automated circuit board assembly equipment including but not limited to solder paste deposition, pick and place, inventory management software, solder reflow and circuit board cleaning equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Instrument Proficiency Check Joint Industry-Standard (IPC-JSTD) IPC 620 and/or IPC J-STD or equivalent industry fabrication standards.
  • Experience with industry standard hand tools and test and measuring equipment.

Additional qualifications at the 532.3 level

  • Advanced skills and understanding of and significant experience translating complex electrical, and electronic drawings for circuit board design and assembly.
  • Experience developing and updating production documentation such as work procedures and drawings.
  • Advanced fabrication electronic skills to include proficient use of standard machine tools, hand tools, soldering techniques, and test and measuring equipment.
  • Ability to lead and mentor junior technicians in the day-to-day operations of an SMT production line.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Current certification in IPC-JSTD Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies or IPC-620 Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies certification(s).
  • Experience working in an ISO 9000 manufacturing environment.
  • Experience operating Mycronic circuit board assembly equipment, vapor phase soldering and cleaning equipment.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
